Honestly, I don't see what the Clintons and their surrogates have done up till this point as "racial demagoguery."

At least, unless I've missed stuff.

Whatever they've done, it would pale in comparison to Ron Paul.

Off the top of my head here, there was the campaign manager in Ohio(?) who issued emails on Barack's name and Muslim heritage, making the madrassa claim. She resigned.

There was Bob Kerrey making a point to make a big deal of the middle name "Hussein" in an interview. He apologized.

Then there was Bill Clinton excusing Obama's South Carolina victory because well, "Jesse Jackson won there ya know..." which raised the eyebrows of quite a few black leaders. That one was recent, you don't remember it?

^Tsk, dontcha know that Republicans aren't responsible for what their underlings do?

I'm still waiting for one of the Usual Apologists to explain how they know the "McCain fathered a black child" rumor was a lie perpetrated by the Democrats.

Who are the Usual Apologists? Personally I loathe McCain.

Ron Paul is/was responsible for anything that an underling does. Is Hillary?

That sort of stuff is petty and ignorant, but I wouldn't call it "racist." A whole lot of right-wingers would fall into that category, including several on this board, if we were to have the category that broad.

There was also the time when someone in the Clinton circle who happens to be black tried to raise the specter of Obama's drug use. Can't remember the specifics. I would say that's below-the-belt, but I'd guess that they would have done the exact same to a white candidate.

I do remember it. Not particularly troubled by it.

I'm taking it as, "We would have expected Obama to win SC because he's black, and the last black candidate to run here won so it stands to reason that he would get a lot of the black vote to propel Jackson to a victory."

I just don't find that offensive. It's not a completely unreasonable thing to think.

Sure it's dismissive of the notion that South Carolinians would have voted for Clinton if she were running against, say, conservative blacks like Alan Keyes or whoever. Or that Obama's own characteristics caused his win.

But I personally wouldn't drop the r-word on the statement, regardless if it were Clinton or Ann Coulter who made it.

Yet you are the exception, not the rule. Do you think the dust up would've been bigger if Anne Coulter or Trent Lott had said something similar?

Wasn't it the founder of BETV that raised the drug use?

The Democrats figured that McCain would be easier to beat in the general election. So they planted the rumor, hoping that people would jump to the conclusion that the Bush camp spread it, seeing as how it was most likely to have anything to gain. Then when people knew the mean ol' Bushies were spreading racist lies, they would flock to McCain, and Al Gore would stomp him in the general.

Then there would be a huge party with members of the MSM, Hollywood, gun grabbers, tree huggers, criminals and lawyers to celebrate Gore's victory.

    Duh.

Coulter calls him "B. Hussein Obama" routinely. She's gotten to the point where either people don't take what she says seriously or whatever.

I can't really speak to what the average black guy or black leader would do.

I could see it going either way. I'd say black people expect the Clintons to be above racial attacks, and so they might be more upset when one is perceived, whereas the long list of Republican attacks that are race-tinged would have people disappointed but not exactly shocked. Or I could see that some people would give Bill and Hillary more leeway because they are supposedly sympathetic.

Personally, I don't think I would take offense at the concept itself, unless there was something more in the subtext, more of a wink-wink, nudge-nudge "You know them darkies stick together" tone.

Now I haven't seen a video clip of Clinton saying this, so maybe there was more of that than I'd anticipate. But just the words themselves taken at face value don't bother me.

Yes! It was Robert Johnson. Thank you for stirring my memory.

About the only difference is if you assume B & H are pulling the strings behind commentators, and that they got a black proxy specifically to avoid charges of racism. That'd be a little upsetting.
