don't mean to be a pain but dose anyone know if the old fatty ps3 has a in built wireless thingy in it or do I need to buy a add on unit? I'm thinking of getting my ps3 on line. I do have a Ethernet port at the back.(well it looks like one anyway) but was just enquiring about the wireless side of things first also when i do go on line I may get a few dlc things for some games. do these get paid via a credit card or do I but some sort of 'points'
I have one of the older units with the bigger case. 80gig, I believe. I was concerned by the ethernet port, too, but then I adjusted the system settings and searched for wireless networks, and it found the router immediately. No physical connection needed. So I guess it has internal wireless and bluetooth. I haven't tried downloading any entire games, though.
Both. I'd say go to walmart/gamestop/etc and get a psn gift card though rather than use your credit card. That way if you have kids they won't clean you out when your back is turned.
You can set spending limits for kid accounts... but none of the accounts are password protected, so what para said is best.. use the PSN cards. As far as I know, all PS3's are wi-fi enabled. Intresting to note that if you have a Wireless G router (55Mbps) it will work at it's optimal proficiency. No need to go Wireless N (300 Mbps) for gaming.
^ I have a ps3 slim so I can't offer too much help. But I have heard of older ps3s not liking the new updates. Some people seem to blame their hardware failing on the software updates. I read something about one guy claiming that one update caused the disk speed to increase in an attempt to speed up load times, and that caused extra heat which killed his system. Of course there are tons of people on the playstation forums who say this is crazy. Those people's hardware was doomed to fail anyway. Seems alot of people seem to think three years is the lifetime of a standard ps3, I think THAT's crazy. Anyway, it's up to you. One thing to look out for (I picked this up in the forums)- if your fan starts running like crazy and no hot air is coming out of the back, your system is getting ready to die. It has nothing to do with software, it means the thermal paste around the chip has failed and needs to be replaced. Something that seems to happen alot on ps3s from what I gather. There was a nice do it yourself thread over on the playstation forums.
