The very lovely Stacey Dash, continuing her trend of pissing off other people of color, opined that if Black people in the entertainment biz want actual equality, it may be time to get rid of things like BET and black-only awards. Do they want to be equal, or special?
Yeah. It's a huge hypocrisy. Frankly I am tired of the attitude of entitlement and the double standards. "We're black so must be nominated for at least something". No. What about if the work just isn't as good? I saw Straight Outta Compton for instance. Good, but not the masterpiece the online ratings would suggest. The whole argument from these extremely wealthy black celebrities is that minority kids watching the Oscars won't be inspired because there aren't any black faces among the nominees. Load of bollocks. The fucking host is black FFS, We really need to move away from this idea that minority people are entitled to be represented in spite of quality. The real issue doesn't lie in who nominates millionaires for awards. It's in the industry itself. When the industry catches up and produces colourblind quality that is representative of the ethnic mix of the US and, thereafter, the world, then you would likely see more minority nominees in any event. Moaning about nominations is not to understand your own complaint. BET Awards? Biggest hypocrisy out there. Fighting racism with insidious segregation like that is just another barrier against true equality.
While there's at least one great performance that sticks out for me - Idris Elba in Beasts Of No Nation - the example of Straight Outta Compton being used is just laughable. While it was an enjoyable movie, it was so fucking far from being worthy of a best picture nomination It wasn't all that well put together and the acting - apart from the guy who played Ice Cube, but he's Ice Cube's son so it would've been embarrassing if he hadn't nailed it - wasn't very good at all.
Another movie that gets mentioned is Selma (was it released in 2015 or 2014?) but it was boring as fuck and frankly an insult to the legacy of Dr. King.
Is it hard to accept that your opinions are no more valid than anyone else's? What’s ironic is that the usual gripe among actors about casting for that kind of role is “What? They couldn’t find an American who could play the role?” I now anticipate some Tea Party group demanding that white actors be read for roles depicting RL black people...
In an attempt to prove that anyone can be an actor, @Ten Lubak reads for the role of Chewbacca Jr. only to hear "Thank you - next!" Disconsolate, he goes home to play with his meme generator.
I will start a movement demanding that comedy awards go to Jews only in proportion to their percentage of the population, perhaps the world population! I would be pretty trivial to make a cute looking list of award winners divided into columns like "Jews, Christians, Muslims, Amish" - proof that Jews control Hollywood!
If we're singling out black actors I thought Will Smith was good in Concussion. I would also say Creed was a good film even if it was a redo of Rocky. That would be it of the films I've seen.
Honestly, seeing that a movie was either nominated or has won an Oscar is usually enough for me to avoid ever watching it. The list of Oscar winning movies that I've enjoyed is very small. Out of Africa, won 7 Oscars....boring as fuck!! When I see a movie, I want to be entertained, enthused, stimulated intellectually. I do NOT want to leave being depressed and hating life. I go to work for that thrill.
Exactly - what the Oscar staff like and what the laymen like are two different things. Martin Scorsese is a god - but it took many years to get Oscar recognition. Damn - if the people you are making great movies for like your work and keep you in business, shut the hell up!
What was that Michael Keaton movie that won, Birdman? I couldn't sit through two minutes of it. How about a movie about a conflicted Oscar voter trying to decide what to pick? Bet it would win six Oscars.
Hmmm......it would seem blacks are pretty close to "on target" for their percentage of the US population as a whole. It's ASIANS and LATINOS who need to get rolling on a boycott. What we need are more martial arts/landscaping movies to level the playing field. BTW Spike Lee - how many white players did you see on the court at the latest basketball game you watched? That's what I thought. My grandchildren won't go to a basketball game and see people who look like them and get inspired!
Heck, the blacks are outperforming whites on Oscar wins! We need to rein that in before Hollywood goes the way of the NBA.
What were the Hispanic Oscar wins, since Cheech and Chong didn't even get a nomination? Only one Hispanic has ever been nominated for best lead actor or actress. In frustration at the loss he left Hollywood to lead a ragtag group of ships to find Earth.
Hollywood Reporter on the Academy's decision to strip voting rights of many members Yeah, the solution to any racial issue is to strip people of voting rights. What a bunch of idiots.
They actually had a Mrs. Chewbacca and a Chewbacca jr on a really bad Star Wars television special which aired in the late 1970's. I once found a torrent of it back when I was in college.
I'll be watching the Oscars because I watch them every year for the host, and this year it's Chris Rock. Some years are better than others, though. I'd love to see Ellen DeGeneres host them again. I'd like to see Billy Crystal host them again. I thought Seth Macfarlane did a great job, especially this one (ignore the tilted frame due to copyright):
So you don't really have a full recollection of it. George Lucas devoted decades to tracking down and destroying every copy, but a few survived. Enjoy.
Speaking of awards shows (and music in general) how about those Grammy Awards? I'm going to go out on a limb and say blacks are definitely holding their own. So between the Grammy Awards and the BET awards they are bound to win something!
It's called "mob rule" combined with moving goalposts as needed. It's a great system, and you might as well get used to it.
While turning anything related to the Oscars into a drama is by definition ridiculous, I find it equally disingenuous to argue that the under-representation of minorities in nominations is anything other than a reflection of Hollywood's inherent racism. Hollywood makes movies, even movies starring black folks, for white people. Therefore, they nominate the actors that White America is interested in watching, because they want the telecast to get big ratings (which it hasn't in recent years). White America doesn't give two shits about Straight Outta Compton (and neither do I), just like White America didn't care about 12 Years A Slave. Hell, most theaters couldn't even screen Compton without hiring extra security to make sure the Brothers didn't shoot the place up. And Will Smith in Concussion? Will Smith deserves an Oscar about as much as Polanski deserves an invite to the Nickolodeon Kids Choice Awards.
Jada's real problem is that she's a terrible actor who gets most of her roles because of who her husband is, and she's 44 which, in H'wood, unless you're Meryl Streep, means "Sit down, honey. Take a couple of decades off until you're old enough to play grandmothers and then we'll call you...maybe." Now she can blame her lack of opportunity on "being passed over because I had the courage to speak out." Huh.
