I've seen two of those, neither up for best picture/actor/actress. Have barley heard of the best picture nominees. Time was, that wasn't the case...
EDIT: To Lube the Beagle, re: Dreamgirls Except it was snubbed for Best Picture, when most thought it was a lock for the category. I guess the Acadamy felt that Chicago winning was enough for the new era of movie musicals....
Well, only seen "The Queen", via a bootleg DVD one of my ma's penpals sent us. Meh. Only one of those I wanna see is Pan's Labyrinth. Well...yeah...and Venus for Peter O'Toole.
Of all those, I've only seen two of the three animated ones (Cars and Happy Feet...HF will win that, hands down) and POTC2.

No, the academy used to nominate more than just artsie, rarely-seen, only-out-in-limited-release films. They used to nominate (gasp!) the blockbusters. Now, if it makes it into the top 5 for the year, it seems to suddenly get dumped from the list.
Pirates is the only movie on that list i've seen and Last King of Scotland is the only one I have even the slightest interest in going to see.
Of the Best Pictures, I've seen The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima and Little Miss Sunshine. I think it's a pretty wide open field, but I think Letters will take it. LMS is a great movie, but not Best Picture material. Babel was a little polarising and the Departed is basically a cop movie. The Queen might sneak in, but I doubt it. Letters will take it to honor Clint Eastwood, since there's no way in hell Scorcese doesn't finally win Best Director. I'm shocked Dreamgirls didn't get nominated. I think most of the actor categories are pretty much locks except supporting actress. Eddie Murphy, Forest Whitaker, Helen Mirren are the front runners, but I don't have a clue about supporting actress. The nominees are two no-names, a ten year old girl and an American Idol contestant. I think Blanchett might sneak in and take it. Sacha Baron Cohen got robbed!
Yep. The Oscars used to reflect actual successful films, not the ones that the elite thinks should be successful films.
Yes, how arrogant of the Academy to consider films on artistic merit, as opposed to advertising dollars!
How dare they defy Midamerica by not nominating MONSTER TRUCK APOCALYPSE XXXVI: BLOODHUMMERS REUNITED
Yeah, I know. Never saw the movie, so I can't comment. But one movie getting three nomination in the same category? Never seen that before And what's with the Lube the Beagle crack? I haven't done shit to you lately?
Where did I criticize the practice? I simply pointed it out Anyways, are you saying that some decisions are better left to those who know what they're doing rather than to the masses? I wonder if that logic can maybe be applied to some other topics in life PS: What is POTC2? :flow2:
a) Don't go pissing on Mid-America. We're not all mullet-wearing Meth-cookers! b) [action=Nautica]shudders. [/action] Sorry, but that's always my reaction when I read/hear the word "BloodHummer"
How about entertainment value? This is, after all, one of the main reasons films are made...that and profit. If a film does neither, what the fuck good is it?
Oddly enough, I almost would have rather watched that than Pirates 2. God almighty did that movie suck.
I've only seen Jesus Camp and Little Miss Sunshine. POTC2 is around here somewhere thanks to Netflix. There are several on there that I would like to see, but I'm waiting for them to come out on DVD. Movie theaters suck.
Remember that you're living in a world where Date Movie--a humour-free abortion of a movie--took more gross box office (inflation adjusted) than The Shawshank Redemption and Kangaroo Jack--a film about a CGI rapping Kangaroo--similarly outperformed Schindler's List. The financial success of most movies has less to do with their quality and more to do with star power, public taste and marketing. There are plenty of awards ceremonies that reflect basic popularity--the MTV awards, for example--why should the Academy Awards do that, too?
