I'm so glad these guys remained calm. I don't know why the police felt the need to arrest them.

Like I said, the company just wants it over so it is following the OR manual even though that manager did absolutely nothing wrong and was just following company policy. I hope he was just transferred because if he was fired he has an excellent wrongful termination lawsuit.

Turns out the men in question weren't even asked to leave. Someone just called the cops.

And he called 911 -! :wtf:

Good thing Starbucks changed its policy on weapons in its stores or the damn fool might have been so panicked he shot up the place.

We will never know why that Starbucks felt compelled to call the police. The CEO has already apologized. Whether that’s to quell discontent and protect his brand or because the phone call was legitimately inappropriate we will never know.

@Dinner will now provide evidence that these men were cursing or in any way resisting during the event. :waiting:

Then @Dinner will explain why the white woman who'd been sitting there for hours was not asked to leave. :waiting:

Another person was in there for hours and hadn't purchased anything, yet wasn't carried out in handcuffs. That person was white, not black.

It's not so much that people are outraged at a business kicking people out, it's that they were very clearly kicked out for being black and having the audacity to do what other patrons were doing in the cafe.

Apparently they were asked to leave by the cops three times and that's why they were arrested. But, the cops shouldn't have been called in the first place, it's overkill.

@Dinner is the type of person who thinks black people should appreciate the time white people took to lynch them in order to stretch out their soar necks.

Ever notice how conservatives and libertarians are all "the individual over the collective!!", but then turn right around, and always defend corporations over individuals?
    Ever notice that?
    I bet you've noticed that.
Well, it never hurts to bring it up.

you are aware (I would think) that if you need to call the cops about a situation in many places you have no choice but to call 911 if you want them to respond? There is no alternate number to call the cops in most cases. If there is such a number and your call isn't about generic questions like "when are the visitation hours in your jail" they will route you to the 911 number.

Maybe where you live, but in NYC and L.A. the precinct numbers are easy to find, and I'm assuming that would be the case in a city the size of Philadelphia. You don't want squad cars diverted from serious crime or a medical emergency because someone's neighbor is playing their stereo too loud.

I'm pretty sure every police department has their numbers listed, but a lot of people got 911 beat into their heads growing up, it automatically became the number for the police.

I haven't been in a Starbucks in ages, but they did have a policy of not letting anyone use the restroom without ordering something. IIRC, you could place the order and, while they were filling it, use the restroom, but this seems to be showing favoritism to one kind of customer over another. Odd that they pride themselves on being so socially conscious - when it involves their overseas suppliers - but not when it applies to a "certain kind" of customer. :chris:

    Some more info:

    https://apple.news/AYlFb6RSpTIiXQFxA6xn6GA

Holly – who wouldn’t give me her last name nor share a business card for fear that it would spark online stalking, either by me or whomever I passed her information along to – has managed the 18th & Spruce Street location for a year. And, during that time, she has encountered many individuals who loiter in the café with no intentions of purchasing; at least one of those persons, she claims, chased her around the store after she asked them to leave.

According to Holly – who grew visibly flustered during my unrelenting questioning – a corporate policy germane exclusively to Center City Philadelphia locations prohibits excessive loitering. And if that policy is violated, then management has the discretion to ensure it’s enforced, even if it means calling the police.

Holly told me that she doesn’t inform the customers that she’ll be calling the police. I retorted: “Everyone deserves a warning.”

The police are not going to arrest you right away. They will explain the situation and ask you to leave on your own if they are called to a store unless there is another crime committed like larceny or assault. Stores without security might be better off calling the police if the customer ignores requests to leave even if the customer is not made aware. A person may do damage or assault someone if they are enraged the cops are coming, and yes that includes entitled uppity white people. Plus you do not want some guntard whipping out their gun before the cops show up because they think they can threaten people. Normally the bullies with guns think a little more when a cop is around because their cowardly asses do not want to deal with another armed person when bullying others.
