Oh snap!! IMHO, this is the best platform available... Wii's are cool too... but wow. To be outsold by it's predecessor is embarrassing. $400 is a little steep for a gaming console... The only reason I went with it was because of it's Blu-Ray compatibility and wi-fi. IO guess for all things considered, it's a good price... but it's about to get even better.
When you look at how well the sales of the PS2 is doing you wonder why Sony didn't include backwards compatibility on all of their PS3 systems and pull the plug on the PS2s.
I'm still buying new games for my 5+ year old PS2. Picked up Tomb Raider:Underworld last weekend. I'm just not spending $400-$700 on a fucking video game console. Sony had some big brass balls to try and float that bullshit in the first place. Damn right they'll start making some price cuts. They deserve to eat some losses for the arrogance alone. When PS3s get down below $200, then I might step up and profit from their despair. Fuckers.
I just bought a new PS2 last year for $130 to replace a busted one from 2001. It still gets plenty of use.
I keep waiting for mine to die on me. It's been my console, CD player, and DVD player for many years now. Got it used and dirt cheap, as I recall.
The day I bought my PS2 was an interesting one. I talked over whether or not it was financially sound to buy one with a drunk, half Native-American biker named Bubba who lived in a caravan on cinder blocks at the side of our driveway. It all made perfect sense at the time, but now I wonder if the financial advice I got is as sound as it seemed...
PS2s are the best. The only reason we don't have one right now is OH's brother is using it (and using it as a DVD player) and our PS3 has backwards compatibility. IMHO removing backwards compatibility from the PS3 was the worst move Sony could have made. When FF XIII comes out we will be trading with my brother in law the PS3 for the PS2 so he can play it and we still have a DVD player. I don't find this news all that surprising.
I have a backwards compatible PS3 as well. I just got it for the Blu-Ray player, it's very rare that I play a game, although I do like playing Rock Band from time to time. I got mine on craigslist a few years ago for 300 or 350... can't remember which, but it came with 2 controllers so I think it was a good deal. I love watching Blu-Ray's so it was worth it to me.
Originally, I was stoked about the PS3 and all the things it was going to offer. Then it came out in production and 60% of the stuff I was excited about wasn't with it. So, now I just own a PS2. I need to get another 360 though. I miss mine, even though OH doesn't want me to have it--mainly 'cause she knows I'll dissappear into it nightly. XD
My MiL thought it was fate when she bought it, otherwise we wouldn't have one. She bought it for all three of the boys, but one is going to school in Indiana, the other doesn't care, so OH and I got it. I think the PS3's main problem is the pricetag (duh) but number two was when it came out, there were absolutely no games people wanted to play. The PS3 we had literally just sat there for months before OH finally saw a title he might play. Now I use it for Little Big Planet and that's it. It's a really expensive DVD player.
You make a good point... but all things considered, I think it's a great deal. Not only do you get a gaming console, there's Blu-ray.... and IMHO, The PS3 is better than most BD players because it's wi-fi capable... Which means no need for an Ethernet cable for software updates... and wi-fi with the 80 gig HDD means that it turns your TV to a hella-sized computer monitor. Just last week, Vuze (formerly Azureus bit torrent client) upgraded their software to convert downloaded *.avi video to stream through PS3 so it plays on your TV! No more burning DVDs!
They keep making games for it, and they're cheap. I bought a PS3 last year, when they brought the deluxe model out of retirement for MGS4. All my friends agree, it is the superior choice.
DVD? You should at least rent Blu-Ray's if you have an HDTV to watch them on. If you have a 1080p TV they look better than going to the movies.
PS2 was the perfect balance of gaming selection and multi-purpose CD console. I still play Playstation games on it, too.
My PS2 mainly collects dust. I bought a PS3 for my Nephew two years ago, and I don't think he even uses it!
A case of SONY pwning itself yes Richly deserved if you ask me. And you haven't! For the price of 1 PS3 you could get an X-Box Arcade & a Nintendo Wii Eff SONY! For roughly a 100 bucks more than the cost of a PS3 you could get a PS2, X-Box Arcade & the Wii Have a Console-opolis in your videogame/computer room I can wait & will before shelling out dough for PS #3. SONY
I have a PS2 and an HDTV. I have a PS2 because it cost me $40. Some time ago I had an XBOX 360, but I replaced it three times in a month and a half and that soured me on ever trying it again. When it's in the shop more than it's in my room, it's a waste of money. Now, the graphics don't look very good at all, but it's okay. I'm not shelling out $400 for a game system. J.
You're forgetting that the bare-bones Xbox Arcade is a piece of crap when compared to the PS3. Actually, with all three of those systems combined you still wouldn't get the functionality that a PS3 offers. Before you go thinking you're some kind of expert, you're talking to a guy who owns a PS3, 360 Elite and sold his Wii to another member of this board. I know the perils and pitfalls of all three systems and I honestly get the most enjoyment out my PS3. Kuranes, how's it treatin' ya?
But it's still a Sony product... So they still make money... And i think they'ld rather people buy a PS2 then a XBOX360 or Wii...
Expert or no expert, SONY's out of touch with reality, especially now, seriously expecting folks to shell out 400 bucks for a console I'm no expert believe me What I am is an afishymeadow Just like all of YOU
You bitch like the 360 wasn't so damn high when it was released. I payed less for my PS3 than I did my 360 Elite, and you wanna talk about a price gouge? PS3s come with wireless internet standard, you can play games over the internet for free. Oh and did I mention it is able to play the only available physical format of HD movies? Yeah, well, I think it was a good investment, but don't take the word of someone who knows. Sorry if you're mom can't afford to buy you that new PS3, us big kids can afford our own.
Well, if that doesn't just beg for some Red Room content. Anyway, maybe some of the big kids find that ridiculous price tag just a bit too insulting to stomach. Maybe I wouldn't pay that much if I could find it stuffed in my couch cushions, because a fucking game console shouldn't cost that goddamned much and we're not quite so eager to bend over and let Sony have it's way.
Trust me, I'm quite familiar with my boundaries in here, Bailey and I sorted that out when they opened the room. Hey, fair enough, but I didn't exactly rush out and buy one either. It was out for about a year before I even thought about it and even then I waited until my tax return came back. What I'm getting at is that it is a much more sound investment than buying one last gen system and two current gens. Still, owning a PS2 could be the most sensible thing considering there are still games coming out for it, not to mention the incredible backlog of great games for it and its reliability.
Don't forget that whole "replacing my XBOX 360 every two damn weeks because they couldn't pay 12 more cents in production to get a better fan and make the case a little bigger." J.
^ yes I've heard some folks have problems with X-Box 360s. The Red Ring of Death I've had no problems with my X-Box 360. I guess it's miss or hit! True the X-Box 360 was expensive when it first came out, but the Arcade goes for 200 bucks And the Wii is an awesome console & goes for 250 bucks I'm sure the PS3 is tons of fun But I & other folks'll just have to wait to have our fun in the sun
Honestly, I chose the PS3 because I primarily wanted a Blu-Ray player... Those babies run about $300 themselves and you need to buy an ethernet cable in order to connect it to the internet for the online content that BD's utilize. That would have run me another $25-$50. When you consider the fact that PS3's come with wi-fi standard, gaming capabilities and free online game play, it's a no-brainer. I hosted my first superbowl party this year. A couple of guys came over early and we played Madden '09 against another superbowl party of people that no one even knew down in the Bronx, NY. 4 on each side!! It was fucking awesome!! In lieu of this story, there are rumors that Sony is considering a price break to $299. Hopefully, BD Players will follow suit... I have no doubt in my mind that the PS3 will be the dominant gaming/BD console. Time will tell, but either way, I'm satisfied even though I payed full price for mine.
33% failure rate on the XBOX 360s. That's an estimate. It may be a bit higher or lower, but that's essentially 1 in 3. That is a deplorable failure rate. Blu-ray players can be bought for $138 at Walmart. Decent ones. I just bought a 25ft ethernet cable for $4. Yeah, the game system is nice, but PS3s are still way overpriced. J.
I always find it humorous when people spend months even years debating all the pros and cons of both the 360 and PS3, quibbling about the price, heming and hawing and NEVER even buy either console! The hours of entertainment you get out of BOTH consoles are really worth the relatively small ticket price, even at $400 the PS3 is still a bargain. A quick comparison backs my assertion up. How many nights out to dinner and the movies would $400 get you? Maybe 8 if you go to inexpensive restaurants? 4 or 5 if you catch a movie afterwards? What do you have to show for that money? A full stomach and a few hours of entertainment? With the PS3 or XBox 360 you get hours and hours of entertainment, a piece of hardware that will last years, you can watch DVD's on both and Blu-Ray discs on the PS3. Really no comparison in my mind. So to the people that are just plain cheap that wait years for a $100-$200 price drop I say shell out the damn $200 and get out of the late Stone Age of gaming. The difference between the PS2 and PS3 is a big step forward, they really are universes apart. Combine both consoles with a 1080p Plasma or LCD TV and the differences are stunning. This is coming from someone that has worked on really high resolution computer (2560x1600) monitors for years doing high res prepress graphics. Unless you are a purist 8 or 16 bit game enthusiast and simply don't play any games above 16 bits, then DO IT! Even then you can still go back and play the old consoles. I have owned just about every console since the Atari 2600 and own both a Xbox, an Xbox360, a PS2 and a PS3 and am not a fanboy for either console. There have been so many incredible advances in graphics and game mechanics in the last 5 years that the PS2 or first gen XBox just can't take advantage of, to just sit back and console (no pun intended!) yourself with playing last gen games on the PS1 and PS2 while complaining about a price reduction is just tragic IMO. Maybe I am just a game geek that loves technology and computing hardware? Maybe? Sorry for the War and Peace length post, I just thought another point of view needed to be considered.
Meh, I still play video games and computer games from the 80s. I don't really care about the graphics.
