Who's getting one? Which one and why? I'm hoping to get a Playstation 5 ($499) sometime around Black Friday... If I can find one. Pre-orders don't seem to exist at this point and there have been reports of production difficulties. I'm not sure there will be one on the market before 2021. The reason I'm going Playstation first is that their 1st party games are the only games I consider "Can't miss" games. SpiderMan, Uncharted, The Last of Us God of War, and now Ghost of Tsushima... They are all day one games for me. Hopefully they will revive the inFAMOUS series at some point. I hope to get an Xbox Series S ($299) sometime shortly after. With Microsoft buying Bethesda game studios and Obsidian, this will be the go to place for Western RPG's. I think Bioware is the only other major WRPG maker not under the Microsoft umbrella. MSFT's GamePass service is something I hope is successful enough that Sony feels the need to implement something similar. $10/month and you get a "Netflix for games" type service across all of MSFT's platforms. Xbox/PC and XCloud... something that could potentially bring these games to mobile platforms. With their acquisitions of Ninja Theory, Obsidian and Bethesda game studios, I feel like the quality of games coming to Xbox will increase substantially. As a matter of fact, I feel like Xbox will have the upper hand this generation.
Sony can go fuck themselves. I finally upgraded to a PS4 earlier this year, about a week before they announced the PS5. Also, I very much don't like the fact that you can't play PS3 games on the PS4. I don't know why these companies fuck the consumer in the ass and we all just seem to say, "Harder! Faster! Ooooh, I like getting fucked in the ass by tech companies!"
Yeah... Sony did make an absolute error by adopting an exotic architecture for the PS3 in the Cell Processor. It was way more complex for 3rd party developers to make games for, so they ended up abandoning it for the PS4 for the more traditional x86 architecture. But a byproduct of that is that true backwards compatibility for the PS3 is impossible... So they have to make these expensive remasters to get PS3 games on the PS4.
Eh I've always been an Xbox guy, for no reason in particular, so I'll guess I'll just keep on truckin' that way when the time comes to buy a new one
Neither for me. I’m pretty happy with my Nintendo Switch and my Nintendo GameCube. If I ever get bored with that I have my PC games and my RetroPie machine for 80s/90s gaming.
I'm not as torn by the Xbox exclusives these days (Halo was a deal-breaker back then, not now) and was a latecomer to the Ps4 which I bought mainly for Spider-Man. But I love certain features on the Ps4, in particular the controller charging from the device itself and power-save mode (so you can leave the game in memory and come right back to it the next day). I still have some issues with the controller layout after years of the Xbox, but if I do feel the need to upgrade the PS5 could be a strong contender.
Atari VCS, thank you very much. In all seriousness, I have an Xbox One, and frankly, I don't even use it for games anymore. It's my Amazon Prime Video / Disney+ / DVD / Blu-Ray machine at this point. I doubt I'll ever buy a gaming console ever again.
See, I just can't get using a console as a Blu-ray or vid app player unless you have no other choice. I use my PC with HDMI out to the TV for Amazon Prime or Netflix (when I need to flick between show and other apps) or the SmartTV over wifi if I don't. The only time I use the Xbox as a Netflix player is on the bedroom TV which isn't smart (and that's my old X360 with a wifi dongle), which is very rare. A dedicated Blu-ray player is pretty cheap these days and using an actual remote is far bloody simpler than trying to navigate with a thumbstick controller.
Halo: Infinite has been delayed so it won't launch with the new console, which is gonna hurt sales I suspect as it means there's no major launch title.
This one?!? I'll get a PS5 in the next 6 to 12 months when they become easier to find... Sony exclusives always appeal more to me than the Xbox ones...
Well!! After 10 months of it being on the "market," I've finally been able to get my hands on a PS5. The pandemic caused a worldwide supply crunch which affected not only the console market, but all markets reliant on semiconductors. This led both Sony and Microsoft to sell their consoles on online sources only and not put them in stores. This led to a situation where scalpers used bots to purchase massive quantities at a time and pretty much boxed out end users like us. I've seen second hand sellers asking for as much as $2000 per console. Even GameStop has resorted to only offering bundles with several other products to the consoles in order to pad their sales. I hoper that none of you here resorted to rewarding that type of behavior to these market interrupters. I see that the scalped prices has fallen to around $700 now, so I guess people are not responding how the scalpers hoped. It seems like the supply issues are resolving and retailers like Best Buy are finally starting to get stock in stores. I was lucky enough that Sony themselves sent me an email saying that they would hold a PS5 for me for 4 days if I was interested... I signed up for a wait list at https://direct.playstation.com/en-us back in November. I'd actually forgotten I did that for a moment and thought Sony just felt sorry for me. First impressions? Well.. it's great!! It's a ton faster than the PS4 and games where I wait 30-45 seconds between load screens and start up times now take about 15-20 seconds. I know it sounds nominal, but given the number of them and the limited time I have to game, it really adds up to more time actually playing the game. The first game I booted up was Marvel's SpiderMan: Miles Morales. At first I didn't notice much of a difference in graphics, but man... the difference is VAST! The textures really begin to pop... So much so that you can notice differences in the materials of Miles' suit. there are parts that are spandex, parts are patent leather and still others are matte plastics/rubber. There are several different blacks you see as well. At one point I was fighting and it started to snow and I couldn't help but notice that snowflakes were falling and hitting Miles' suit and later melting on him. It's just awesome!! The PS5 Dual Sense controller is something special, IMHO. There is some weight to it so it feels very good in my hands. Like if I grip it tight, it's sturdy enough to handle it. The PS3 controller felt like a fisher-price toy in comparison. The haptic feedback is something you'll need to feel for yourself to believe it. The triggers on R2/L2 have variable resistance and it communicates that to you. For instance, as Spiderman swings across the skyline, you can envision his path as a sine/cosine wave. Gaining speed as he loses altitude, and losing speed as he gains altitude. The haptic feedback in the triggers gives you sense of inertia as you move forward. This gives you a better sense as to when to let go of the trigger in order to maximize speed or altitude. Looking forward to playing shooters to see how developers mimic different guns and kickback. My understanding is that the Xbox Pro controller can do pretty much the same thing so we should see broad adoption of this functionality this generation. With that said, I just want to state how much I like the touchpad on the PS5 Dual Sense. This is the second generation of PlayStation to use it and I think it's a winner while Xbox guys think it's a gimmick. Bottom line, it's an additional mechanism to interact with the game environment. I embrace it, but no game that has to appear on both consoles will ever use it until it can appear on both consoles. I think it's a winner. All in all, very happy.
It just occurred to me that you said you've recently gotten a PS4. What have you played so far? What do you plan to play? If I could recommend a few games, I'd start with Marvel SpiderMan! It's awesome! After that I'd say 2018's God of War. That game really spoke to me as a father. Never thought I'd get so much from a video game. I don't know if you played or liked The Last of Us, but I loved it! Maybe you'd like The Last of Us part II. That one was pretty divisive. I honestly think that the people who don't like it are upset because the protagonist didn't get a total victory in this one. To be honest, she took a huge L. But if that's the case, then you are not looking for a good story, you just want someone to validate your morality. The LAst of Us part II challenges you as a player. The most "novel" like experience I've had playing a gam ever. Excellent gameplay however. I'd be interested in what you think of those.
It's been almost a year now. I have both Spider-Man and Last of Us Part II. Great games. Also got the Uncharted series, including the PS4 exclusive one.
Finally got one as well... 26 PS4 games i own got a free PS5 upgrade and now some of the other games will use the PS4Pro enhancements(never upgraded to the Pro)... https://www.gamesradar.com/ps4-pro-confirmed-games-list/
