Would it matter? Navy SEAL or not, unless you are participating in an actual training event (going to a range or going out hunting) you can't be carrying a weapon. All military bases are a "gun free" zone. Unless you are a bad guy, in which case welcome aboard! :rotfl:

That was supposed to be "deceased." Although, yeah, I guess "diseased" fits. He came down with a case of dead.

Unusual that the suspect is a black guy. It's usually young white psychos that do mass shootings.

And he apparently entered the building with only a shotgun, but took better weapons from the security guards he killed.

Another day, another mass shooting. Ho hum. All the usual suspects on both sides of the issue will regurgitate their well-rehearsed gun control talking points knowing full well that gun control as a political issue is dead in this country, and after a few days the media will decide they'd better refocus on miley cyrus's latest shenanigans. Wash, rinse, repeat.

This one was a loser for everyone. The shooter wasn't a muslim terrorist so he didn't fit the Fox News agenda in that sense. Although, the typical Fox viewer wouldn't be able to distinguish buddhist from muslim. He's black so they could use that to race bait, but he had also served in the military so that complicates things. Better if he had been a homeless crack addict who had 15 illigitimate kids by 13 different women AND they had discovered that he had voted 5 times in 5 different counties in the presidential election so they could use it to push the voter ID / vote suppression agenda.

The left didn't fare any better, he wasn't a redneck white supremicist so Jesse & Al couldn't race bait. He's black but also a deranged killer so he can't be another of Obama's adopted sons. I don't really see any of the left's other pet agendas being served by this....NSA snooping? Pot legalization? War on Women? Maybe if he was gay and they can argue his rage was the result of being oppressed by the hetero power structure. Yeah, he couldd be the black matthew shepherd.

I don't have the time and energy to do the research right now, but IIRC, around the mid 1980s there was a big shooting on a military base. The idea to fix it was to radically curtail guns on military bases. If anything we now have more shootings than we did before we started restricting guns. Might as well go back to the old policy. It can't hurt and could conceivably help.

You know if you look at the mass killings you see it's not usually a young white guy.

From 1982 to 2013 ages of killers:

    13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 19, 20, 20

    20, 20, 22, 22, 23, 23, 24, 25, 25, 26, 27, 27, 28, 28, 28

    31, 32, 32, 34, 35, 35, 35, 36, 36, 37, 39, 39, 39

    40, 40, 40, 41, 41, 41, 41, 42, 42, 42, 42, 43, 43, 44, 44, 44, 44 (female killer), 45, 47, 47, 48

    50, 51, 52, 55, 59, 59

    64, 66

In terms of sheer numbers more killers are white but that should be expected since white males outnumber all other males.

Garamet the guy shouldn't have had guns but it's the fault of a system that refuses to deal with mental illness.

All the mass killers show mental illness problems but no one steps in to make sure they have no access to weapons.

I'll bet that the most likely thing that happened was that no one treating this guy told anyone else that the guy had severe mental problems and shouldn't be buying guns.

This is good - they're getting steadily older, Eventually you'll have to be over 100 to be a mass-shooter, and soon there won't be any.

Okay, I'm a gub'mint contractor with Security Clearance, so let me get this straight.....
he shot out tires in a rage fueled blackout, and still had a Security Clearance....and that same contrator job? :wtf:

Guess I shouldn't sweat over a few bounced checks on my next security application.

BTW - if this were an action movie Arnold S. would have clothes-lined him onto a coma as he ran around a corner, then said......:waiting:

Incarcerate the dangerously ill for life at the first display of violent tendencies. It would've prevented this. Would've stopped Adam Lanza, too.

NOT indulging the delusion that a free society can be structured in a way that guys like that could never find a way to hurt people.

    Possibly this:

Though I'd specify psychiatric hold, not general pop.

In Alexis' case, the Navy had two chances to act and they blew it. At the very least they should have taken away his security clearance.

Local LEOs should have confiscated his guns after the first "shooting through the floor" incident. "You can have 'em back in one year's time if there are no further incidents and a shrink clears you."

And there should be a database where local enforcement can cross-check with military records and red-flag anyone acting out.

There should also be far more resources going toward treatment of PTSD.

    Yes.

No. See you're concentrating on the gun here. Under your scenario if he doesn't accidentally shoot the floor he still carries out his mass murder because he doesn't lose the guns.

The proper thing would have been the instant he was determined to have severe PTSD, hearing voices, paranoia, sleep issues and violent outbursts the authorities should have stepped in and taken the guns and he should have been put on the can't buy a gun list.

There already is a database. But if the person is not put in the database as a do not sell guns too then there is nothing that can be done.

Plus realistically he could have bought guns off the street or stolen them.

The key is to grab these guys when the mental issues crop up. If all you do is chase the "gun" you're going to miss the guy and he's going to shoot the place up.

    Yes.

Agree 100%. But when I say all that, I'm a "gun-grabber." We'll see if anyone here wants to try slapping that label on you. (I can think of at least two who'd want to, but they won't now.)

    You are a gun grabber.

Stop trying to pretend you're not.

In fact in your post you can see the gun grabbing because you say as soon as he shot the floor the guns should have been taken away. As soon as his illness got to a bad spot that's when he should have had the guns taken. There shouldn't have been a need to wait for him to have a negligent discharge.

You're "chasing" his guns instead of his mental illness.

Looking at that pattern of failure and missed opportunities on the part of the authorities--who, apparently, are the only ones trustworthy to have guns--makes me think that maybe, just maybe, it isn't the right of millions of Americans to keep and bear arms that is the problem...

See? It's a reflex with you guys, even when I agree with you that the problem is not the guns, but who has 'em.

And you wonder why I don't trust your judgment.

No, in fact, the "shooting through the floor" incident followed his diagnosis of PTSD and his being kicked out of the Navy Reserve for a pattern of misbehavior.

You're essentially saying "Three strikes you're out, unless there's a gun involved."

And you wonder why I don't trust trust your judgment.

And maybe you'd be comfortable having a neighbor shooting through your ceiling (even an accidental discharge suggests the guy's a butterfingers; you want him for a neighbor?), but most people wouldn't.

And you wonder why I don't trust your judgment...
