Someone else may have tried to fix it, because the first post wasn't from this thread. It was a MC post that had nothing to do with socialism.
Prior to September 11, 2001, most sports didn't open with the national anthem. I think baseball did. But, that's it. The reason it started was a military effort to increase recruitment. That's why it's political. It's supposed to keep up support for a war that has lasted 20 years.
No. The anthem has been played before sporting events for decades, from high school level to professional. https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...layed-mark-cuban-colin-kaepernick/6702871002/ You're right about the military getting extra-involved after 9/11, though.
I've been around for almost half of a century. Every football game, baseball game, basketball game, or automobile race I've ever been a part of or spectated started with the national anthem. When my son was a toddler he thought the last two words to the Star Spangled Banner were "Play ball!"
I am also pretty sure this did not start with 9/11. I do believe it was a bit of a thing for celebrities to sing it before sporting events long before that. I cannot say for sure as I really never watched that much, but that was a thing that entered my radar so I cannot imagine it was not a thing.
