As for the topic it was Bill Maher and his over the top hatred for everyone religious that clued me into the fact I was sliding down a slippery slope of hate when I started hearing myself talk about Christians like he does. I will say there is a huge problem with the church and the right, but I do not want to toss people's spiritualism and religion under the bus because there is a purpose to it. If you start talking about throwing every Christian or Muslim in an oven seriously because they are all hopelessly ignorant you are standing right next to Hitler at the bottom of that slope. They do not have to, and there are better ways, but if it takes bloodshed to wake people up to the reality bloodshed is horrible then they give us a body count so we have an example. In this case it is smart to ductape up the radical right who just want to insult the black community and ask why is it that people who suffer from poverty and worse yet the black poor do not get driver's licenses. For that we do have to identify a cultural stigma with official government workings as the man. We also have to recognize the problems with getting Id for poor families who have been outside the system. A driver's license is hard to get for a person whose family has lost or never really kept records of their birth. On top of that places which cater to poor births may not have the records they are supposed to have due to a number of reasons. So not only does it become a financial hardship to get a birth certificate, but it also may be a geographical hardship if your poor family has moved away because they needed to find a cheaper place to live, and it could be a hardship of s system that simply does not have the records readily available anymore. It is great if you are born to an affluent hospital where they can look up your records, but what if you were born to a hospital that has burned down or went away and was too poor for anyone to recover your records? You might not even be able to find out where you were born if your family is not readily available. What if you are passed around to avoid foster care because your mom died or is in jail or on the street and your dad was never around. Finding out the hospital where you were born might be impossibly hard for someone who knew where to start, but if you are some high school drop out who wants to try to make things right your first obstacle might be one that gets you arrested because you talk to the wrong official and they bust you for not being legal even though you are. I lost my license years ago and it was an annoyance to have to go get a copy of my birth certificate so I could update from AL to floriduh. I know the process, but I had lost the official birth certificate in a move and I had to get a new one. Luckily it was not a terribly hard process, but I did need a permanent residence to have it mailed to that would not be questioned. Last thing I needed was for them to start getting all rule oriented because I might be stealing an identity. I am white so talking in person gets things done if you are nice to the officials. That cannot be said for all the black people I have tried to help through this shit. There have been times that it is shut up and let the white guy talk because even the black people who work for the state do not trust their own people. That white skin goes a long way to conning people. In the end I was lucky not to have to wait a few months because dad had another copy of my birth certificate in a safe because he is still around and keeps good records because he knows what a PITA it is to recover this stuff. If you do not have a decent set of parents or they are dead this could be really hard. Once the right hears no family and black they would rather that person just dies in the gutter than have a chance so all these obstacles are wanted by them because they don't think blacks are human or citizens like they are anyway. One of their points is correct that not having an ID is the first major roadblock to a person becoming a part of society and effecting it through voting and participation. We have to have a way for poor people to regain their footings and participate because they eventually get tired of wasting time and effort just to be knocked off the hill again. When the hill of society is so xenophobic and hateful of your skin color and everything is a trial where some white people get to knock over everything you establish because fucking with blacks is their favorite activity then why bother trying to be a part of that society? What we have to do is stop the racists from kicking black people when they are down and making it seem like this is not their society. When you hoist up racists in front of town ha and have a banner that is blatantly about racism flying over its roof maybe they have a point in not trusting what goes on on the inside, and we have to recognize someone in there put those monuments and flags up to say stay away you are not welcome right at the gateway to any way to participate legally and as a community. Those things need to be torn down and those who support their racism need to be very publicly removed from the state if we ever want to welcome someone that isn't a WASP. We need to say it may be something fuckhead has over his house but this has no place in our governing bodies because you are our people, and we value your presence.
Nice try... NYC is an urban area in a solidly Blue state. Now try going down to rural Mississippi and ask a black family there if they have ID. Ask the oldest and poorest person you can find.
While true, it's still worth noting that this is largely because blacks vote Democratic. Not originally, but I imagine that most Republicans making these sorts of decisions nowadays are motivated far more by party than race. Not saying this because it makes it better, but because if we want to fix root causes of problems, we need to work on the right ones.
No, I would say they interfered in ways that had absolutely nothing to do, in any way, with voter ID. It's like saying "Stop credit card fraud! Lower the speed limit on the interstate."
