No thread about this? Rand Paul has been filibustering the John Brennan nomination all day. I expect a drone to buzz in and Hellfire him any minute now...
So, he calls himself a proponent of the constitution, but he's committed to stopping the Senate from functioning properly, using a technicality in its internal rules?
protesting the nomination for the head of the CIA. he's making a point about his opposition to the drone program.
Eh, let him filibuster. I remember Bernie Sanders filibustering on the Senate floor for hours on end, a real filibuster. What Rand Paul is doing is also a real filibuster (where they actually stand and talk the whole time), so I say let him go for it. I don't agree with him politically, but if it's a legal maneuver, and he wants to use it for protest and is willing to spend his time doing so, so be it.
Trying to prevent the President from appointing a person who would murder US citizens with a drone without due process...
Who here has stated such? From what I'm seeing, most people are doing what people in the Red Room always do, which is crack jokes and toss out opinions. I've yet to see any pro-American killing comments.
Actions speak as loudly as words. Ridiculing Paul for standing up like this marks you as a murderer, scumbag.
That's a bit of hyperbole, and by "a bit", I mean a shitload. Maybe dial back the rhetoric, some, and approach this in a more reasonable manner, lest you condemn all Wordforgers, including yourself. How many times have WFers cracked jokes, played games, and otherwise behaved like assholes in threads where children, and other innocents, have died? Are we all child murdering bastards? By your indictment here, I'd say apparently we are, and that all of Wordforge should be in prison, especially Packard. Or, you could realize that we're just joking around in a thread that matters not to anyone with any influence at all in Congress, and that it doesn't mean anyone's endorsing murder. Can you do that? Can we approach this on a sane level instead of charging in like PETA at a Quizno's and condemning everyone there? Oh, and for the record, I am fine with Rand Paul doing this filibuster.
I'm actually against it but it is bullshit to hold up yet another appointment over a fringe unrelated issue. If congress doesn't like it then they should outlaw it and not play games holding up dozens of appointments just because they want to be obstructionist.
Actually, this is a case where I'm in agreement with Paul's filibuster. This is a good time to think about how we're moving forward with the use of drones on domestic soil, and how we need to approach it carefully. This little bit of politicking on Paul's part is a good opportunity to think that through. Brennan's appointment will happen. This is just a delay that gives enough time for people to think over what he's going to do once he's in there.
It's not bullshit you stupid fuck. Nor is it a fringe issue you cocksucking prostitute. The President of the United States should not have the authority to use drones to assassinate people within the borders of the United States and its territories. And Congress won't outlaw it because the stupid fucks in the Senate who call themselves Democrats will not pass such a law. (to be fair at least one Democrat is helping Rand Paul but the rest? Not a peep out of them) Of course let Obama be a Republican and you'd be falling all over yourself to demand the law banning such a thing as well as demanding impeachment for the administration even thinking it. And this is one time I do not support the saying that Republicans would support a Republican administration if the roles were reversed.
I'm more referring to the whole drone situation. I can easily seeing this become a major problem in the future, and I'd prefer we nip it in the bud now. Drones are practical in certain situations, but there are times when they should not be used. This is one of those times.
There's nothing I can imagine anyone on American soil doing that would deserve being splattered by a drone. The worst crimes I can possibly imagine can all be resolved by a kick down the door, and a handcuffing, or a bullet to the kneecap at the worst.
Exactly. Like I said on TBBS, I don't want to be the guy who lives next door to the guy who is getting targeted by hellfire missiles.
According to the Constitution, The House of Representatives and The Senate of the United States sets its own rules for how things will be done. The Senate has a filibuster rule. Therefore he is following the Constitution since he is following the rules as the Senate has created for itself. And unlike most previous filibusters he is actually standing at the podium and speaking for hours. According to Drudge he is now at 11 hours. He knows that ultimately he can not stop the nomination being voted on but his point is to bring the public eye into sharp focus on the drone program since that is what the news programs will be talking about. I have much respect for him because unlike most of those bloody idiots he is actually standing up and fighting for something he believes in.
Agreed. This may be the first time I've ever said this, but "Go Rand Paul! Filibuster the hell out of that session!"
A great deal of people are worried about the militarizarion of our nation's police. What will happen when the military is actually involved? Also, is this really a power we want to give to executive? Remember, partisans, there's a D in the White House now. But, eventually another R will reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and they'll have that power too.
