And McCain picks up 5 points in a battleground state.

The PPP poll released yesterday has Obama up by 8 in Ohio.

Which would seem to prove Bulldog's point :soma:

The "we've spun and twisted our sample sizes to produce the most favourable results for the Holy Messiah, Lord Obama" polls taken by PPP are even more worthless than the other polls IMHO.

Even from poll to poll within the same organization, results are all over the place.

Methodology is key. Some polls look at so-called likely voters, but there are many ways to guess at who that might be. Other polls, don't even bother to try for accuracy. Many recent news organization polls, for example, have sampled equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans. How is that remotely useful when party registration numbers are not equal? Could it be that the media wants to report a horse race?

My guess is that the only worthwhile polls are the ones we don't get to read -- the state by state campaign internals. Those we can only guess at by considering the actions of each campaign, which are often in response to what a poll says. If we want to know who is strongest in Ohio, we need to look at who is campaigning there most frequently, and conclude the other guy is in the lead.

That's how Obama picked his Group of 18 target states, which includes everything from North Dakota to Alaska to Georgia.
