Even though they are for "children" I've thoroughly enjoyed the entire Harry Potter series. Not once did I feel as if she were talking 'down' to the children and thus made it palatable for young and old alike. And Dan Brown's books are a real good old fashioned thriller - and he has a new one coming soon. Plus I'm getting ready to reread the entire Pern series.
So I went to Barnes & Noble for the first time in ages and the first thing I laid eyes on was a bargain-priced collection of four H.G. Wells novels- The Time Machine The Island Of Dr. Moreau The Invisible Man The War Of The Worlds This single volume was only 9 bucks! I snatched it up right away and have already finished it. I would definitely call these stories timeless classics. The Invisible Man was probably the weakest of the four books but still a pretty good read. It is amazing to think that Wells was writing about genetics, time travel, and alien invasions decades before the first World War. I'm not sure if he invented science fiction, but he certainly made a huge impact in that field. I also picked up an illustrated version of Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time/ The Universe In A Nutshell... also bargain priced.
Ive spent most of the year re reading my library ( a lot of Trek / Clancy / WEB Griffin) and some new books. Ive enjoyed most of the Trek (TNG / Titan) books over the past year. Dug the technothriller fantasy aspect to the Presidential Agent Series by Griffin. Re-read The John Birmingham time travel trilogy. Now Im re-reading Guardians Of The Republic, the 1st and AFAIK only history of the US Army's NCO corps. Anc, I highly suggest you get this one and read it. As for what Im going to read next I have not made up my mind. Im thinking of "Enders game" (never read it before). Or maybe something on Von Stuben. Or maybe Horse Soldiers or Green Eyes and Black Rifles. Havent made up my mind yet
I've still got two books on the shelf from the last time I was at the book store, but they're boring. One on running a web site, and one on Access. But since I was in the bookstore this week, I picked up two more. One is boring and on sales and the other is "Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".
So I'm most of the way through "The Power of Myth", and I should start on either "Buidling Websites for Dummies" or the O'Reilly Access Database book. But it's Sunday, so I'm either digging into "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" or "1984." I'm leaning towards Orwell.
