Real poverty does exist in the U.S. but it is pretty rare. Most is confined to a few isolated rural areas (Blacks in the Blackbelt and along the Mississippi, Whites in the Appalatians, Amerindians in Oklahoma, and Hispanics along the Rio Grande). Yes there is also poverty in the city, but the very location means many more services available for the poor than in remote spread out rural areas.
I don't have the data on me at the moment, but there are pockets of acute poverty in the state. It's not a diss, as some of the poorest counties in the blackbelt are in Alabama.
