Can't speak for Xbox, but I got a non-SSD external hard drive for my PS4 and there was no noticeable difference in load times compared to the internal drive. I've heard that SSDs do improve load times marginally, but not by a lot.

And I mean, consoles are going to necessarily be slower than PCs, and Rockstar games especially.

Most definitely worth it. It's pretty much another whole game, with a different/continuing storyline. Lots of characters reappear, as a continuation and they don't come out as tacked on. But the game difficulty is increased. Ammo for example, isn't readily available and at first, you need to be careful of what areas you enter and "clean out", as you can run out of ammo and then need to use melee weapons to gain ammo.

Welp. finished the game, excepting the free roam after offing Micah. Went to see that building Arthur donated to and took out the guy from Tilly's old gang - shame the credits reminded me it was possible to catch up with her in the epilogue and I didn't. :( Always liked Tilly - the age gap would'a been weird but she'd have been better for Arthur than Mary OR Mary-Beth... and awesome as Sadie was, she ain't the romancing type no more.

As for that song mentioned upthread, what was it? I found "Cruel, cruel world" excellent but the housebuilding song was cool too. "Cruel, cruel world", if you change the words from "I've lived too wrong" to "too long" could make for a damn fine Western Doctor Who song...

Gone back to replay - Arthur is more interesting than John. Chapter 2 is remarkably open for so early in the game, and I hadn't twigged you could progress chapters without playing all the yellow missions... so I'm now on chapter 3 having rescued Micah from Strawberry but not helped him get his "peace offering". This lets you roam a bit, having fully unlocked fishing and Dead Eye, plus the wagon fence for the odd extra $10-40 per steal.

Have done the serial killer side quest, which I skipped first time. Got the Jack Hall gang treasure too - a cool $500 helps early on.

Most satisfying? I did the mission previously where the old coot sends you to retrieve his stuff, but you find out he used to track down escaped slaves for a living, and you burn his stuff. This time, after he whined about still existing and not getting respect, I solved the issue. You actually gain honor for shooting the SOB. Bonus, he fell forward into his burning gear and caught alight himself. Repeatedly (the body doesn't degrade and once it goes out, the campfire sets it ablaze again).

Also found those hapless Klan guys where the new recruit sets his robes on fire, then later two of them drop the cross they're setting up for burning on themselves and get crushed. Each time, there's an elder Klansman who bemoans his fate, so it seemed only polite to shoot the fucker.

That's extremely interesting - what are Sony doing with the internal drive that's slowing it down so much compared to a USB external?! The OS must be hardwired, so it's not that it's having to load operating files at the same time as loading the game...

If there's a similar benefit (or even lack of detriment) to using with the Xbone, time to splurge.

EDIT: OK it's apparent down to the USB3 connection actually outperforming the internal SATA link.

    Looks like it:

On the PS4 the games are installed external and the internal drive is used for savegames, screenshots, apps and themes...

Gotta say, unless they move away from the van der Linde gang entirely, I would not be against RDR3 following Sadie Adler as a main character, kicking ass as a bounty hunter down Mexico way.

Gah, I keep going back for a full playthrough but the autosave hates me if my horse dies and I wanna keep it, dammit! It's the White Arabian you can tame from Lake Isabella. Had one run where I rescued Beau/Penelope of the Gray/Braithwaite saga but the horse ran into the path of the train while I was driving it and went under the wheels! Now I just finished hunting a couple more Legendary animals but went over a long drop and killed us both by mistake, and the autosave kicks in AFTER it rezzes me and gives me a shit temporary nag!

They need to add more manual save slots as I'm maxed out - this is a 30-hour game and I like setting save points prior to major story events and each chapter beginning, so they fill up damn quick. My last manual save was some way before my latest horse death so guess I've got an hour or so of replay...

    I turned off auto-save.
