Bundys Complain Of Poor Jail Conditions, Unpalatable Food

Claims that former Malheur Refuge occupiers Ammon and Ryan Bundy are losing weight while in jail, don’t match with official paperwork. But attorneys insist jail conditions are less than ideal for the defendants.

Ammon Bundy’s wife, Lisa Sundloff Bundy posted on Facebook that the pair looked “skinny and frail” at a hearing last month.

“I could tell that they were not being properly fed,” she wrote.

Ammon Bundy’s attorney, Mike Arnold, also insisted at a court hearing Wednesday that the pair appeared “emaciated” after they returned from a court hearing in Nevada, where they face charges related to a 2014 standoff at Cliven Bundy’s ranch.

But Multnomah County jail booking information shows the brothers have gained 10 and 20 pounds.

Sheriff’s Office Capt. Steve Alexander said dietary needs — whether medical or religious — are met at the facility.

“All the inmates in our custody care receive three meals a day. Approximately 2,650 calories per day,” he said. “They also get milk, two to three times a week and some other things incorporated into the diet throughout the week.”

However, Alexander said the jail doesn’t weigh people when they’re booked. Staff rely on what they’re told by inmates for documentation.

Arnold said Ammon Bundy and the other inmates are served bland, unpalatable food. He also noted that defendants in the refuge occupation case who are still in custody don’t have adequate access to discovery evidence or the jail’s law library.

Arnold said the Multnomah County Detention Center isn’t a facility designed to house prisoners for long periods of time, and many of these issues wouldn’t exist if the defendants had been released during the pre-trial process.

Indeed. In fact, on a more general note, jail conditions would pretty much universally be much improved for criminals if they were let free. I wonder why no one has thought of that?

This is not a conspiracy against these jackasses. Jail food sucks. No duh. Assholes better learn to cook jail style. You can purchase the ingredients to make a decent meal, and if you use some of the meats they cannot kill in the jail kitchen you can make some decent stuff. They may be in segregation or processing where it is harder to do, but it is Fucking prison. If you do not like American prison I recommend you go seize government buildings in Norway. They seem to be in the business of making sure their prisoners are happy.

I also expect the Bundy morons will make their time harder. I am pretty sure the guards will get sick and tired of the bullshit and they are not going to get any favors.

Guaranty they are getting enough food. It might not be "what mommy & daddy serve" or more likely Waffle House in their cases, but it is edible and if they eat everything they are given, then they are getting enough, period, full stop. And agree they are not making any friends from jail or fellow inmates by bitching & moaning. Man up, shut up, and deal with the consequences of your decision. Jesus my 70 year old friend/neighbor got arrested & booked a couple of weeks ago (and not a long enough jail stay IMO but if she didn't learn her lesson next time it will longer) . People die in my neighborhood lockup occasionally and they don't need the bad publicity - frail old people can get stressed out and whatnot. But as for that occupier who is 46 years old (the other dude is 73 I think) fuck him. Too bad he doesn't like jail food. Don't want to hear it!

Though he wasn’t charged with trying to escape, Ryan Bundy may have planned an escape from the Multnomah County Jail in April.

Jail staff found a 12- to 15-foot section of a bed sheet that was braided into a rope in Bundy’s cell, along with a container of extra food he wasn’t supposed to have, Capt. Steve Alexander with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office told KOIN 6 News.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoff Barrow dropped the bombshell at a hearing Monday in which Bundy and his brother Ammon sought to be released as they await trial on charges stemming from the January takeover of a national wildlife refuge in Oregon.

In trying to show Ryan Bundy is a flight risk, Barrow said deputies searching Bundy’s cell in April found torn sheets braided together in a 12- to 15-foot rope, as well as extra pillow cases and food.

Bundy denied he was attempting an escape, telling U.S. District Court Judge Robert Jones it’s simply not true.

Court records show Bundy hasn’t been charged with any crime related to the episode. Bundy was charged with having contraband in his cell.

Jones says he’ll decide Tuesday whether to release the Bundys.

Last week, he and his brother Ammon Bundy were reunited in the Multnomah County Jail. They are working on their defense.

In a thorough defeat for federal prosecutors, jurors Thursday acquitted the leaders of a standoff at a national wildlife refuge in Oregon that brought new attention to a long-running dispute over control of federal lands in the U.S. West.

A “stunning victory for rural America” is how Neal Wampler, one of the defendants, described the verdicts.

The jury found brothers Ammon and Ryan Bundy not guilty of having a firearm in a federal facility and conspiring to impede federal workers from their jobs early this year at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, 300 miles southeast of Portland. Five co-defendants also were tried on one or both of the charges.

Defendant Shawna Cox said her activism would continue. Of the acquittals, she said, “ This is one win and we need to do more.”

The Bundys are now expected to stand trial in Nevada early next year on charges stemming from another high-profile standoff with federal agents. Authorities rounding up cattle at their father Cliven Bundy’s ranch in 2014 because of unpaid grazing fees released the animals as they faced armed protesters.

The trial had a chaotic, dramatic end as Ammon Bundy’s attorney Marcus Mumford argued his client should be released from confinement while U.S. District Court Judge Anna Brown said he must be returned to the custody of federal marshals since he still faced charges in Nevada.

Mumford’s protests in the Portland courtroom grew louder and louder until he was finally tackled and tased by marshals, according to Cox and another member of the defense’s legal team. The judge ordered the courtroom cleared.

After verdict, there were whoops of joy as people streamed from the courtroom.

Defendant Jeff Banta told reporters, “I love it, It’s great. I’m going to to get on with my life, he said. He said he expected to have a beer tonight and then head down to Nevada, where he hopes to get construction work and support the Bundys in their ongoing legal struggles.

Drama marked jury deliberations, too. One juror accused another of bias and Brown on Wednesday replaced the accused juror with an alternate who had to travel back to Portland from Central Oregon.

The 41-day takeover that ended Feb. 11 raised tensions across a broader swath of the rural west, including in Washington, where the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge south of Cheney was temporarily shut down. It also stirred a backlash from local officials, tribal leaders, environmentalists and others who resented the militants’ efforts to stake an armed claim to public lands.

The defense team repeatedly sought to dig into the alleged government abuses that prompted the occupation, attempting to portray Ammon Bundy and the six other defendants as fitting into a broader American tradition of principled protest against government overreach and arrogance.

“Thousands came to his cause and his movement not to break the rules … but to try to find a way to get the government to follow theirs,” Mumford said in his closing arguments.

Prosecutors sought to keep the case more narrowly focused on a group of people who took over a wildlife refuge that didn’t belong to them.

“This case at its core is about the rule of law,” prosecutor Ethan Knight told the jury during closing arguments. “The defendants picked and chose which laws apply to them, which laws they will abide by. That is why we are here.”

A total of 26 people were charged in connection with the occupation, with 11 pleading guilty, and others, including Washington resident Darryl Thorn, facing trial next year.

This case is part of a broader Justice Department prosecution of Bundy family members, who have emerged in recent years as major figures in the militant movement to try to turn more federal land over to local control.

The second — and far higher-stakes federal prosecution — is scheduled to get under way in February in Nevada, when Ammon Bundy, Ryan Bundy, their father Cliven Bundy and 15 defendants face conspiracy, assault, weapons and other charges that could result in decades of prison time.

The charges in the Nevada case result from the April 2014 Bunkerville standoff over federal efforts to round up family cattle on public lands over the failure to pay grazing fees.

The Oregon trial was a complicated affair, with the seven defendants, several of whom represented themselves, facing off against federal prosecutors in a ninth-floor courtroom in downtown Portland, more than 300 miles northwest of the remote refuge.

In closing arguments that stretched out over two days, prosecutors stressed that the defendants were not being put on trial for their beliefs, and had an absolute right to protest federal government actions. But they argued that the defendants’ actions stepped over the line into a criminal conspiracy to occupy the refuge and — through the use of armed guards and other acts of intimidation — keep federal employees away from their offices south of Burns.

Bundy, in testimony on his own behalf, called the takeover a “hard stand” against the return to prison of two Oregon ranchers, Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son Steven Hammond, after a federal judge ruled that they had not served long enough sentences on arson charges.

The takeover ended peacefully as the last four occupiers surrendered on Feb. 11, but before that, on Jan. 26, LaVoy Finicum, a folksy, articulate rancher who had emerged as a spokesman for the movement, was shot to death by law-enforcement officials. The shooting came as police tried to apprehend leaders of the occupation as they drove north to speak at a community meeting in John Day.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials said that the occupation cost the federal government $4.3 million, including restoration and other expenses.

At the Malheur refuge, employees have returned to work. But the headquarters complex, which includes a visitor’s center, will not be open to the public until sometime later this year after completion of a new security system.

The two main Bundy people are still in jail however since they are also facing state charges in Nevada.

And their lawyer must also be a nut since he was tackled in the court room after the verdict by deputies and was tasered. Then arrested. Probably not a good idea to argue with the judge.
