Oregon Proud Boys member pleads guilty to transporting undocumented migrants

A Proud Boys member being prosecuted for alleged criminal offenses during the Oregon City Clackamette Park riot has pleaded guilty to transporting undocumented migrants in Arizona.

Barry Lloyd James Johnson, 58, is allegedly seen on drone video, police body cameras and bystander video from 2021 engaging in violent behavior in Oregon City.

While awaiting trial on the Oregon case, Johnson transported the undocumented migrants in Arizona, violating federal immigration law.

"On or about Nov. 15, 2023, in the District of Arizona, I, Barry Johnson, was driving a 2018 Dodge Durango near Palominas. I was transporting two illegal aliens in the vehicle, including Adrian Sanchez-Texis and Wilmer Jannini Ocampo-Estrada. I knew the individuals were illegal aliens, and I intended to assist them in remaining in the United States unlawfully. I was going to be paid for the transportation," Johnson wrote as part of his Dec. 13 guilty plea.

Johnson faces up to two years in a federal prison for his involvement in the illegal immigration scheme. He told border patrol agents that smugglers would have paid him $800 as a driver for the two migrants and that he had been looking for work in Arizona after losing his job and being involved in a vehicle crash.

On Dec. 26, Johnson attempted to set aside his Oregon case by saying the length of imprisonment he faces in Arizona is larger than what is expected if convicted in Oregon. Clackamas County Circuit Presiding Judge Michael C. Wetzel denied Johnson's attempt to quash the Oregon case after hearing from prosecutors that Johnson had failed to appear on a Nov. 3 call related to the 2021 case.

Oregon prosecutors said Johnson used a knife in 2021 to cut down a sign stating, “Antifa loves you,” then pushed the Antifa member in the chest. Johnson is then seen on the videos making his way into the Oregon City park where the main riot was already unfolding.

Prosecutors say Johnson walked to Highway 99E and engaged in additional threatening and violent behavior toward several unidentified citizens after being ordered out of Clackamette Park.

In April 2022, Johnson was convicted of harassing someone at the Planned Parenthood office in Salem, which led to his 18-month probation and court order to successfully complete an Anger Management Program through MW Services.

Johnson is not among the Oregon Proud Boys who have so far skipped town on their riot charges and have eluded capture on new warrants for their arrest.

Both of the Proud Boys sought by police and prosecutors are alleged to have rioted at Oregon City’s Clackamette Park in 2021 in a violent clash with anti-fascist counter-protesters:

Thirty-two-year-old Proud Boy Gordon Wesley Cronk Jr. failed to appear in court on the Clackamas County charges, so a bench warrant has been issued for his arrest. Cronk has a neck tattoo of the Proud Boys’ insignia and was previously convicted of second-degree burglary in 2014 in Washington County Circuit Court.
Tommy Roy Campbell, a 46-year-old Proud Boy, failed to appear at his arraignment in December 2021, so there is an active warrant related to his alleged involvement in the Oregon City riot. Campbell doesn’t appear to have any previous convictions in Oregon.

Proud Boys have a pattern of missing court dates. Proud Boy leader Tusitala “Tiny” Toese, 27, has been arrested in at least three states for street brawling. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in 2020 and then disappeared from court supervision, probation and GPS monitoring.

In July 2023, Toese was sentenced to prison time for leading a riot and a violent confrontation with Antifa on Portland streets in 2021. At 6-feet-5 and around 300 pounds, Toese has been a fixture in Northwest extreme-right-wing violence, street brawls and confrontations with Antifa for years. He received 70 months of “hard time” from the judge, who is allowing an additional 20-25 months of soft time, with up to 20% off for good behavior.
