I just saw this on DVD last night and I gotta say... It surpirsed the hell out of me. I picked it up for laughs but it was actually a very enjoyable movie. As Rocky films go, it is definitely the best of the sequels. And the ending gave me a little bit of a lump in my throat. (!) What an uplifting message... It's so rare to see that kind of thing these days, especially in a Hollywood flick.
I love the movie for two speeches, the one to the boxing commission, and the one to his son on the street.
Thank God they didn't go with the other ending (it's in the deleted scenes on the DVD). It would have completely changed the feel of the movie.
I'm a huge Rocky fan, and clearly this movie was made for the fans, I enjoyed it and the ending was better than I expected. My biggest complaint is that Rocky was a caricature in this movie. Like somebody doing an impersonation of Rocky from the original movie. In the first four movies Rocky developed as a character, the fifth movie is a abomination, and in the last film they hit the reset button. Not a great stand alone movie but a fitting epilogue to the series.
I'll have to add this to the netflix queue. So they went with the Rocky 1 ending? Good, that was always the strongest point of that movie.
I thought it was awful. With so much stuff rehashed, particulalrly from the first movie, it was verging on self-parody.
I went and saw this one for old times sake, and was pleasantly surprised. Good way to end the series, and it didn't take itself too seriously. Actually, I think I might have even done a review thread on it a while back, but I can't be arsed to go hunting for it.
Got the Blu-Ray this weekend and watched it. I enjoyed it for what it was, although it didn't really go in any unexpected direction. I thought Stallone did a great job of portraying Rocky--sad, not smart but wise in a good-hearted way, noble. I thought it was also great that Mason Dixon (Rocky's opponent) learned the lesson Rocky was teaching his son.
It's an absolutely stunning movie. I love it. Easily on par with number 1. Stallone's performance is easily the best of his career.
