Been applying for puppy adoptions for a few weeks, and finally got signed with a service. The head person came for a home inspection today and really liked us. She said don't worry, we'll get you a dog for sure.

    Yay!

I was about to call Mom to tell her the good news, when my sister called to tell me Mom fell and broke her hip, and hit her head, and is screaming in pain and on the way to the hospital. She's been extremelt depressed about being 90, bent over with osteo-p and being barely able to get around with a walker. She was using the walker, but just simply lost her balance and fell backwards. Sis said she'd call back later with more news.

    Shitshitshit...

Then the puppy place called and said they liked us and would like to give us the dog we applied for, and a contract is on the way, and they'd set up a meet-and-greet with the dog.

    Yay!

Then my sister called back, and Mom has something wrong with her upper ribs that is causing great pain, and they can't figure it out in the Bumfuck, SC med center, so they're sending her to Greenville Trauma Center an hour away. We'll get more news tomorrow.

    Fuckfuckfuck...

So I'm getting a route laid out to drive the 700 freaking miles and 12 hours in case the worst happens. Mary refuses the idea of flying, period. I don;t know how my sciatica will handle 12 hours of driving. We'll switch off every few hours.

Now I'm angsting on whether possibly having to drive down there will screw up the puppy Mary's been dying to get since we retired...

Dude sorry to hear that happened to your mom. Hopefully she'll be ok.

    Great news about the puppy.

And I have no idea which emoticon to use for your post.

    I'll just....

question: is it just New Jersey thing or did you choose to go through a service to get a puppy? Here in Georgia you can go to the county animal services adoption office or a chain pet store where they have adoption events every couple of months or so. No background checks or home inspections required from any of these places. Just wondering!

We were trying several different sources, and the one that bothered to answer us first was a local pet adoption agency, so we're going with them. They're actually interstate - based in SC, and the puppy was born in Bama.

    (As Forbin)
    My wife died. :(
But she came back to life! :polarslam2:
    As a zombie. :(
    And she ate me. :(
    Except for my head! :)
    And I got a cyborg body! :polarslam2:
    With a big giant ding-dong! :polarslam2:
But it has a face, and talks. :(
But it predicts lottery numbers! :polarslam2:
    In Chinese. :(

That wrote itself in my head in the time it took to take a quick wizz, wash my hands, and walk back to the computer.

:shep: now you might get caught up in "interstate canine trafficking"! We don't want to see your face on a wanted poster * you know.

    * the obvious joke would be "we don't want to see that ugly mug anywhere" so please folks, don't make such a joke.

So we went to meet the puppy today, while my sister went to sit with Mom in the ICU.
Cute little yellow lab/huskie mix. Basically what you think of when you hear the word "puppy." So that was good. We bring her home Tuesday.
Mom's chest injury is a fractured sternum and one fractured rib, in addition to the fractured pelvis. She's doped up, in pain, and wishing she were dead. No idea when or IF she'll come home.

    Oy vey.

Not bad! I like songs that tell a story everyone can relate to. It's better than half the shit some of these goofy pop musicians are cranking out. :brood:

Just a small thing. Make sure the hospital checks extra safely on the brain bleed thing if she hit her head. The hospital kept denying my grandfather had one after falling. It was a while later after multiple trips to the doctor claiming he was still having trouble that he was taken into emergency surgery because it was crushing his brain.

Oh, and good luck. I do not want to be too morbid and am hoping for the best, but I have seen enough elderly people fall and that ends up being it. Make sure you say the things you want to say. Better to have done it and say them more than once than to miss a last chance.

good point! Recently when my father-in-law was living what would be his last days with severe Alzheimers his wife found him on the bedroom floor barely responsive. Did he fall out of bed and hit his head? Was he just getting out of bed and lose his strength? Was he hiding something under the bed? The hospice nurse couldn't be sure since he had lost his ability to communicate by then either way so he couldn't tell her.

In my grandfather's case he was recovering from a lung biopsy to remove cancer, and was trying to continue being active by swimming and walking. He was trying to tell the doctors there was something wrong, but the insurance company didn't want to pay for the scan unless there was actually a problem. So they kept putting him off until the problem became obvious instead of scanning early which would have required less dangerous surgery to alleviate the pressure. He had good health insurance, but they are still going to try and cut corners because you need to pay the stock holders.

In his case it was the fact my grandmother is super karen and bugged the hell out of him and the doctors so eventually they caught it. But that was the end anyway because he caught a c-diff infection from the hospital and he ended up shitting himself to death. This was a guy who was at 90 still running and riding his bike. He was not a smoker, or a slacker on the exercise. Even the lung cancer didn't stop him from moving around and being active. He liked his life, worked hard for his retirement, and did a lot of decent things to make his family strong. As much as I may have disagreed with some of his morals and political choices, he sure as fuck should not have gone the way he did. My grandmother did not need to lose him either. If the doctors had just fixed his head early he would not have needed the extended ICU stay and he would not have caught the hospital disease that killed him.

The world could do so much better if people just had some fucking respect and compassion and were not so worried about the next dollar they make. That is the reason I think socialism is an evolved societal concept and hope someday we evolve to it.
