Meh. Can't show me WF properly, can't handle addons like FF. Not interesting Btw, dear Steve, I went looking for keynote news because I'm in the market for a new, cool iPod. And a new, cool and very light, very thin notebook. Can I have those things? Pleeease? Look at this money, it's waiting for you. I wanna give it to you. Honestly.
Well, I'm checking it out now. WF rendered just fine for me. Hell, the reply page even renders without going off the side, like it does in Opera. I was surprised to see that the standard fonts for Safari are used. The entire thing looks kind of blurry to me. I looked at ClearType settings, and they didn't seem to effect it at all, though it seems like I'm getting used to it. Overall, though, page rendering and opening times appears to be about equal to Opera, not the improvements that they claim on their page. Doesn't look like there are a lot of advanced JavaScript stuff, though - when I click to add rep, it directs me to a new page. Though, after clicking the add button, it does take me back to the refreshed page, so I know that the rep went through, which is nice.
Apple hasn't done a very good job with font anti-aliasing. A rare miss from a company that generally is visually spot-on. Some say that it is designed to aid in readibility for very high resolution monitors that are far away from the viewer. Personally even from afar the cleartype seems better to me though. Interesting that you commented on this though, as this was just posted: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000884.html
It *is* only a beta. Even the Leopard version, which I'm currently using, sucks, speed and JavaScript-wise. On Windows, I think I'll keep using FF until October.
The font AA method is the same as OSX though O2C, so that is likely to remain unchanged after the final release.
The iPod requires iTunes... that's why they have so many downloads. It's not because iTunes is so great and everyone just wants to download it.
I tried installing it, the installer froze up my pc. After restarting my pc I was about to try again when I remembered those PC vs Mac adds that chastise PCs for having too much clutter, agreed, and hit delete.
I LIKE Mac OS X's font rendering. Though font smoothing does need to be set higher for LCD's than CRT's.
ClearType just has a really really good configuration tool (which most people don't know about). Spend 2-3 minutes with that and it looks awesome. ClearType is explicitly for LCDs as well, not meant for CRT, or for LCD monitors running lower than their native resolution. The OSX smoothing method looks really over-done to me. I suppose if you had a 30" cinema display and it was 5 feet away, this would be a good thing, due to the insanely high resolution, but this isn't a common situation.
Read that already. Frankly the OS X implementations seems to make things "rounder" than they should be. Anyway, ClearType was initially designed for programmers, and Joel is right its #1 focus is readibility, which for me is most important. Also, as a side note, Joel often comes off as a knobjob who thinks his word is law. Of course, he has tons of readers who make him feel that way, so I can't blame him. Another side note, if you happen to be working with a font designed for ClearType, it is even more amazing. This doesn't really apply to web browsing though, just thought I'd mention it. Consolas is my favorite.
Not sure why people insist on buying new Ipods, etc, without trying anything else out. I dunno, I think Apple has gotten worse and worse over the years, instead of better. Now that they've actually got a customer base, it's almost as if they stopped listening to them. I also stopped using Firefox when I got Vista. IE works just great for me now... It's almost like I'm still using FF on XP. Well, except IE doesn't seem to hog as many resources when it gets cranky. Clear type + LCD = FTW.
I like it. I know it's uncool to like the popular thing but still. I have a Creative Zen Touch too which is great, much better than the iPod when it comes to sound quality and battery life. It's huge, tho. A real brick. And getting music on it is a hassle. I use it when I need 24+ hours (!) of battery life. Unfortunately, Creative has taken back this cool feature and their new players have less or equal battery time compared to the iPod. Means that only the superior sound quality and hassle remain
Two out of how many companies make nice MP3 players? That doesn't like like you've branched out much. IPods have gotten progressively worse, IMO. But to each their own.
I still like my iPod as well... but I will say that the user controls have gotten WORSE every iteration since the first version. The touch wheel sucks ass. It moves way too slow when you want to scroll a long distance, and too jerky when you want to move a few items at a time. And the surface sticks too much to my thumb to make really subtle movements (and I have hands that pretty much never sweat). Oh, and you can't use the touch wheel with gloves. I use my ipod in my car when I drive, and in Michigan during the winter, I wear gloves in my car fairly often. The original scroll wheel was literally 100x better from my PoV. It was also positioned better, so that the device was balanced better when holding it with 1 hand. The shittiness of the touch wheel really makes me doubtful about the controls of the iPhone. If it is really jittery and too sticky as well, it's going to suck balls trying to do anything that requires dragging.
I'm trying Safari. I like the bold, but it is a bit blurry. I think it could be better then Firefox after a couple of updates. It certainly seems to be less of a resource hog.
