wow...I'm predicting this thread will be a shitstorm of biblical proportions. I'm making popcorn as we speak! That said I have no skin in the game since I got my most of formal education & technical training
in the military and the rest was pay-as-you-go and I only have the equivalent of an associate degree in formal civilian education, so no debt. My son just got his bachelor's degree with most of that being paid for via the Post 9/11 GI Bill so he has zero student debt to worry about. However student debt is very much a hot item on the political agenda no doubt about it! Teachers don't get paid shit so why is education so expensive in the first place? Into whose pockets is all that education money going anyway?

way to play the race/gender card WAB! Had you said "I already got mine, so fuck everyone else" you might have a valid point. Sorry but being a white male doesn't automatically get you a reduced price education. If this were the case no white males would be griping about excessive student debt.

Student debt is horrible. :( My first year in university, my scholarships didn't cover everything. :( And I didn't have enough money for the rest, :( I had to go to the bank and borrow it. :( I had about $1500 debt just for that first year! :(

And then there were other years after that! :(

Of course, this was all so long ago that no one in the US can imagine going to uni for that amount of money today. (But it is still possible in France. Vive le socialisme! :frog:)

I got myself a doctorate in 17th century Latvian poetry. I am a very educated man!

And I've been unemployed ever since...

    (Just kidding, on both counts...)

Can't wait to see how the economy will look once people stop going into higher education to avoid debt.

Just imagine how many immigrants you'll need for those high paying jobs?

I get that I borrowed the money and I’m responsible for paying it back, but what I don’t get is why the hell is the interest rate on student loans higher than that of a mortgage? That makes zero sense.

Yet even a person who drops out of college can expect to earn more money than someone who just went to high school.

Far left Dems promoting bailout for the well-off, sweet. No doubts about why that's not part of the leftists' packaging when they promote this kind of policy.

Just pile on more incentives in the wrong places, and in the wrong direction.

What's that saying, consequences smonsequences? And for the Unis, cha-ching. Any chance inflation in tuition costs won't continue to outpace health or housing costs in many regions?

The risk is higher. A bank can take a lower interest rate on a home since the loan is backed by an asset that generally increases in value.

Of course, no one will wonder why college has gotten so expensive even as public policy has helped ever greater amounts of debt to be taken on to pay for it...

Nope It's the consequences of 30 years of reduced state and federal support for education, plus free market forces in a young inexperienced demographic.

If you caveat that with a degree in something actually useful, like engineering or the medical field. Those professional students who take 8 years for that gender studies degree are a HUGE loan risk.

Steve, youre grossly misinformed. Spending on education has never gone down. And please, K-12 (we spend more per pupil in the world, and yet often have lowest performance) is not same as post-secondary, which is the topic.

Government crowded out private lenders, lending decisions became no longer rational or economic based, with the consequence that tuition spiked greater than housing and health cost over past several decades. Any resemblance to conditions that directly precipitated the subprime housing collapse is attributable to fact-based rational observation.

IN addition to fat college foundations, it produces graduates with no prospect for employment; loans are guaranteed even for idiots who have no business in higher education or for fields of studies that lead to few or no jobs.

Not my fault. I have no idea what cuts you're even talking about.

Maybe we have no disagreement on this topic (outside of the role of fed gov, which I would limit to no laws and writing a few checks)? [Although I'd support fed law re reciprocity with China when allowing their 'institutes' and students on US campuses - e.g. for every Confucian Acad. in US I'd require China permit a Jefferson/Madison Institute in China.]

There are *countless* scholarships available throughout America. And I'd support *free* college for poor smart kids, as determined at the state level and maybe funded a bit at the fed level.

Ok, your attempt was pathetic, contrived, and you are beating a dead horse. I would give you about a three on a scale of ten. There was some back and forth, but it was limp. You gave it a good shot, but it seems you do not have enough fuel to make 100 posts.

We will see what your attempt rates when this falls off the front page.
