    I was wrong.

The first estimates are that Sarkozy will have just under 54% of the vote. Maybe it won't even be all that much over 53%; we'll see when final figures are out.

In any case, it is more or less good news (or at least, the news is less bad than it could be) for the Socialists. They didn't get wiped out completely, even though it wasn't really "close."

^If it's that close, I can't see Sarkozy's proposed labour reforms going down at all well...

^ I can't see them going down well in any case. Everyone knows that the French economy will never be straightened out until such labour reforms are in place, but everyone also knows that it will never happen.

My honest opinion is that there is very little hope for the French economy.

Nevertheless, Sarko will be able to get somewhere if he has a parliamentary majority to work with. Chirac brought about some pretty major reforms when he was PM (under Mitterand), with only a 3-vote margin in Parliament.

On the other hand, if the Socialists get a majority in the legislative elections, Sarkozy has basically nothing to say about the country's policies. The PM runs the government, not the president.

Turnout estimated at 85%, according to the Beeb...

Turnout in our council elections last week hovered in the low 30s % :garamet:

Wait. Is it grammatically correct to combine that word with the first person pronoun? I don't think I've ever seen it used that way before on WF.

^ I know. I'm going against all WF traditions. :(

They probably ought to kick me right off the board, but "Ban Asyncritus" just doesn't have the same ring to it that "Ban Packard" does...
