100 tech firms are opposed to new FCC "Net Neutrality" rules which would screw consumers. What Level 3 has to say about this. More at both links. We're going to get royally screwed if the FCC adopts the proposed rules (it'll only get worse if Comcast and TWC are allowed to merge).
I just watched a video from Hank today, where he boils down the Net Neutrality debate. I agree with him:
50 top venture capitalists tell the FCC to "get bent." (More at the link.) Given that the current head of the FCC is in both the Cable Technology Hall of Fame and the Wireless Technology Hall of Fame, its no surprise that he proposed the rules that he did. What is surprising is how quickly and universal the tech community is coming out against the proposed rules, along with FCC employees.
One website has decided to give the FCC a dose of their own medicine. More at the link, including the source code so that other websites can do the same.
And the assrapings continue. More at the link. You know, what with the banking crisis and now this, its really tempting to go all Mack Bolan against the CEOs of megacorps.
Shit at this rate I might go back to the early 90's. I had 56K. They are already making money hand over fist but data caps? I personally would not shed a tear if Comcast and all it's employees caught Ebola and died a horrible death.
If for no other reason than to scare conglomerates like Time Warner, and AT&T, shitless. Seriously, if Google started laying fiber near every major city, everyone in that region would drop prices just to keep Google from gaining a foothold.
Go here to tell the FCC what you think about their proposed "Fast Lane Internet Option" (i.e. how they plan to kill net neutrality). The public comment period has now opened, and the more they get hammered about this, the more likely they are to change direction.
And things are about to get interesting. George Takei just asked his Facebook followers to bitchslap the FCC. I'd say the nerd rage is only just beginning.
FCC Site Crashes After Oliver Asks 'Trolls' To Comment On Net Neutrality John Oliver's attempt on Sunday to motivate people to comment on the Federal Communications Commission's net neutrality rules was apparently successful. After Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" segment explaining the net neutrality debate aired, the FCC website crashed, according to Recode. During his show, Oliver boiled down the concept of net neutrality for viewers, arguing that it should really be called "preventing cable company fuckery." He then asked Internet commenting "trolls" to head to FCC.gov to protest the net neutrality rules, which could allow cable companies to sell websites faster service. According to Recode, the FCC's site logged 1,506 comments, even with the commenting system was down for part of the day. About 94 percent of Monday's comments were related to net neutrality. ---------------- Video here.
And now it gets ugly. Verizon is threatening to sue Netflix over Netflix informing their customers that performance issues were due to Verizon's network being clogged. http://mobile.businessweek.com/arti...-remove-congestion-notices-on-sluggish-videos
I'm cheering them on. When I had AT&T, my connection to Netflix was awful. I'd always go from 4 dots or HD, to 1 or 2 dots, which is about VHS quality at best. Every time, my connection would be slow, even though Youtube videos, and other HD media would play on my PC without a hitch. Finally, I switched to a local ISP, and suddenly I was getting 4 dots and HD all of the time, without freeze-ups. I'm sure it was no coincidence that AT&T Uverse has their own streaming service. No, can't be that at all.
Sadly, it looks like the jackhammering of our asses is going to get worse before it gets better. More at the link. Suffice it to say we're all likely to get screwed if this merger is allowed to go through, regardless of who our internet and TV providers are.
