They weren't witches, they were the incarnation of the Celtic war goddess known as The Morrigan.

The Morrigan, a Celtic Goddess of War, Death and Justice, is associated with crows and ravens (go figure). Her colors are red, black and white, and she is one aspect of the triple goddess (mother, maiden, crone). The triple spiral in the background is found on neolithic sites like Newgrange, and possibly symbolizes this triple goddess, and the eternity of life's spiral dance.
