If the first season had been like the third season it might've lasted longer. The third season wasn't too bad. Sci Fi Universe gave it an impromptu award for "most improved series in its third season". Part of the huge problem with the first season of SeaQuest was that the producers did not want it to be considered or written as "science fiction". They wanted literally every element of the series to be based on something known in the present day. Roy Schieder pointed out that except for the tech that allowed the crew to talk to the dolphin (and back) that everything on the show was on the drawing board in real life. Of course in the 2nd season they went completely off the rails into Space:1999 idiocy.
As a 9 year old sci-fi and science geek, with some degree of obsession with dolphins and sea life, that was the best aspect. Plus it was set when I would be an adult. The first season is set in 2018. I’ll be dead by the 23rd century, I would reach SeaQuest’s future. I still want to talk to and be friends with a dolphin. Hopefully it wouldn’t rape me, dolphins love to rape. That and kill baby dolphins. They’re assholes, which is why I think they seem to like humans, they sense being fellow assholes. Or they just want to rape us.
