The job killing policy that started this thread (paid sick leave) passed at the state level half a decade ago.
Are you the guy who makes a ridiculous assertion and then disappears when the ridiculous assertion proves ridiculous?
Numerous fast-food restaurants are now admitting -- some publicly, some only in quarterly earnings calls with their investors -- that minimum wage hikes cause no damage to their business whatsoever. https://www.jacobinmag.com/2021/04/mcdonalds-anti-minimum-wage-restaurant-workers-tips
Always worth pointing out that while there are some who argue in good (if mistaken) faith, there are plenty on the "abolish/depress the minimum wage!" side who do so purely because they think some people deserve to suffer.
Tragedy of the commons in effect. When minimum wages are optimal, they provide the maximum level of possible money flowing in the economy. In these situations the loss from paying more in wages is more than met by increased demand as more customers can afford more things. However if all your opponents are going to keep wages low, raising yours will increase costs without a matching increase in customer spending.
At some point you have enough money that the power over people is more important than the profit margin. See Costco v Sam’s Club.
I assume that's in reference to how Costco is well known for treating it's employees well, and getting employee loyalty and customer goodwill in return.
Is it? And is it any better than walmart owned sam's club? I've been to both and really couldn't pinpoint any difference. I shop Costco regularly so maybe sam's has gotten worse. I don't think costco is a shining beacon of employee satisfaction. Oops. Wrong again. https://www.mashed.com/144741/workers-reveal-what-its-really-like-to-work-at-costco/ https://www.mashed.com/146836/shady-things-sams-club-doesnt-want-you-to-know/ https://customer-service.com/costco-vs-sams-club-who-has-the-edge/ Might be more of a Seattle vs. Bentonville AR thing.
So many jobs have been killed here that this month Seattle fell to 3rd hottest housing market in the nation.
Seattle moved from 3rd to 2nd in the crane count. DC is at 45 to Seattle’s 43. Considering DC is 40% larger not too shabby. But what are all the cranes for? All the worker protections and benefits have killed the jobs so it can’t be offices...
To reuse someone else’s joke: For someone who claims to hate socialism so much @Volpone really likes being publicly owned.
I'm really very happy that you're getting exactly the society you want. And I'm sure you'll continue to tell us how amazing and awesome it is. No matter what.
Will you admit that the premise of this thread was wrong? If you need a witty reply when facts get in the way just tell people that Seattle is trying to kill jobs, but the numbers prove that government can’t do anything right. You’re welcome!
It's pretty normal where I live for apartments ask tenant to make 2-3x the amount of rent. The only reason I can barely afford where I live now is the 50 percent disability rating from the VA. Before that, I had $80 to my name at the end of the month.
I just had to present my latest check and put down first and last month's rent - oh, and I think a deposit. If an apartment complex ever asked for the value in my savings account I'd tell 'em to go to hell. I don't live in a shit hole or anything. It's on the lower end of modest, I guess. I suppose if I wanted to live in a highrise in downtown Chicago, they may ask for my savings information...
It's been 13 years since the last time I filled out a rental application, and that was with a retired couple who just rented out the one house, so I don't know what's standard now. But those seem like "bank trying to decide whether to give you a mortgage" level paperwork requirements.
Probably a symptom of the fact that many landlords are actually just getting their tenants to pay their mortgages for them. Having bought our own place to live in, it still blows my mind that mortgage repayments are less than what we would pay in rent for an equivalent place.
