    Errrmmm...

    Okay...

When you 2 are done with your little cat fight, I know a self proclaimed animator you might want to look at. He's English though, so I am a bit worried about his work ethic. You know how those Brits are; they'd stop a firefight for their afternoon spot-o-tea. Very distracting....

I actually gave this serious thought... after having three publishers tell me that they liked (one even loved!) my manuscript, but that, at around 300,000 words (although in my own defense, some of them are very short words, and I used some of them more than once), it was a wee bit on the long side for a first novel. I'm working with an agent now, but I have to say, the idea DOES have appeal. Who knows? It hurts to think of not seeing the volume on the local shelves, though.

Look for stores with a section/shelf for "Local Interest" or "Local Authors". They might be interested anyway. ;)

The days of Clavell-length novels in conventional publishing are long gone. The bean counters won't let 'em use that much paper. Your novel is about three times as long as anything they'll look at. Any possibility of breaking it up into a trilogy?

Alas, it IS the opening of a trilogy.

    Anyway.

In petty retaliation, I am showing them, showing them ALL, by writing a much shorter novel now. It’s a love story, set among a background of a war between the mob and the courts of Faery (largely over a real estate deal) at a North Georgia Renaissance Festival. There is also a strangely defective Tarot deck. Would you believe it's not a comedy? It should come in at around 150k words, although, frankly, it needs some tightening. It's a little slow in places, I think.

Funny--some of the best selling fantasies, from George R. R. Martin's to Susanna Clarke's first novel, have been much longer. But what do we buyers know?

Shakespeare said "First, kill all the lawyers." Obviously he never had to deal with bean counters...
