What does anyone care about Dave Chapelle or Cara Dune. I mean, if I totally fucked up my job, would anyone care?
Chappelle's kind of approaching Cosby level huge. Satire has always about punching up since Cairpre mac Edaine first spoke his about Bres. Carano could've gotten away with it if she'd not doubled down and called out the most all american corporation in america un-american. play stupid games, lose your spin-off and action figure royalties.
If you fucked up your job by sending slur riddled e-mails about the black employees to everyone in the office including the black employees, and then went all Karen about it on Twitter, the Klanners would care. They lap that shit up. But real humans that matter, no, not so much.
Yeah, even at the very end all Carano had to do was tweet the obviously insincere apology Disney wrote for her, and she's be the star of her own Disney+ series today. From my own experience, I'd have been fired two different jobs if I hadn't gone along with my managers "hide in the backroom while I profusely apologize for what an asshole you just were, even if I personally think you were right and/or hilarious" instructions. My favourite of the two was me getting "suspended" to show how seriously the store owner was taking the matter, which just meant having the next day off with pay.
Hey, as long as you got paid! I really don't give any shit when a customer complains to me about my cashiers or baggers.
Backed when I worked in FF and at a grocery store, that’s pretty much the same response my boss … indicated s/he gave when someone complained about me.
People from the right care because it touches on a whole bunch of narratives and emotions that they like: it's getting too woke in Hollywood, we and the millionaire entertainers are the real victims here, if big famous celebrities can't speak the truth, we're next, etc. etc. People on the left care because they broadly hope for a more inclusive society and Chapelle and Carano were cutting against that, and were being emboldened by a major corporation that either didn't or doesn't have a problem with the job that they were doing or in the case of Carano make the connection between the stuff she was doing off-job and the stuff she was doing on. They get extra attention because they are celebrities, but I'd think that if people messed up in their job by being similarly anti-transgender and it became known, people would care.
we have one person like that at work in my girlfriend's department... Q balling, antivax, soft spoken conspiracist type. it's gotten to the point where an entire shift will call in sick the days they are scheduled to work with her. Finally got a few formal complaints from clients stating they were deterred from using the services because of her so she's been written up and "counselled" that her international banking clan of lizard people stuff isn't appropriate, but we're still stuck with her
I guess it's easy for us to not care because they jokes and vitriol aren't at our expense. As a member of a marginalized group, I just feel like I need to at least listen to another group when they tell me that they are injured by something. The truth is that I like Dave Chappelle. I gave him the benefit of the doubt when he joked about transgenders the first few times. He didn't seem like he had any real malice or ill intent towards them. His last swipe at them felt like he was going after them though. Like he had an axe to grind. If you take a broader view of it, it was not as funny as his previous work. Maybe he's sensing that too because he promised in this last one that he won't speak about his differences with the trans community again. Dave is a talented comedian to be sure but as it is now, an entire body of his best know work has been him swiping at a marginalized community. That's BAD. I hope he doesn't want to be remembered as that. I wouldn't. Regarding what's her name, I think she's more insensitive than malicious. But again, the most egregious things she's done were not at my expense. Another swipe at transgender people and a terrible analogy between modern conservatives and Jews in Nazi Germany and it wasn't even historically factual? Stupid and insensitive. I liked her character in The Mandolorian though.
I was once fired from a customer service job. One guy called up and said “hello there little lady” to which I responded “hello there little man”. It wasn’t intended to be demeaning or anything, it was just the first thing that popped in my head. Whether I deserved to get fired or not is irrelevant. What is, is that there wasn’t a twitter storm about it. Chapelle and Carano were fired. So what. People get fired. Let it go.
I'll give Gina Carano credit for putting her money where her mouth was and walking away rather than go through the motions of a fake apology she didn't mean a word of. I can't imagine the alt-right circuit pays more than Disney, but she burned her career honestly. Chappelle OTOH is at best leaning into controversy for the sake of attention and at worst genuinely pitching in with the worst people over hurt feelings. If he thinks he attracted too many white bigots with his show, then boy do I have news about Team TERF and the supremacist ideals many of them uphold.
Carano may have done herself a favour - from her efforts in Deadpool and the Mandalorian, she's not a brilliant actress and giving her her own spin-off might have been a step too far. OK, the SW-verse has never been a hotbed of top-quality theatrical performances but carrying her own series would need at least some chops. Now she gets to mouth off to cheering GOPpers, which is more in line with her wrestling days, only the other wrestler is the libs and isn't actually in the ring.
Private companies can fire whomever they want. BUT this mentality of crusading for someone to lose their fucking JOB because they offended your extra special protected class sensibilities is just contemptible.
Same can be said for those twitter storming and youtubing and podcasting to insist she get her job back.
You're in an extra special protected class, dimwit. So protected, it crushed all the other classes. You just don't notice, because our racist great-grandpas were REALLY fucking thorough.
Update: I saw the new Dune movie and it was better than whatever Skinemax reject this Hunter Biden movie is.
