Always the great dilemma. Who gets to sit at the top of the pyramid? For every Boris Vallejo, there are a thousand struggling artists. Probably ten of them are at least as good as Vallejo, maybe one or two are even better. But they'll never get past the plateau they're on, because the people who sit in judgment say "Yawn, well, we've already got Boris."

For every Tom Cruise, there are a thousand working actors. Probably a hundred of them are at least as good as Cruise, maybe ten are better. But...

For every John Grisham, there are a thousand other writers who can actually compose a literate sentence. But the marketing goes to Grisham because he's a known quantity, and it's much easier to keep him churning out the same book every few years than to actually seek out newer and better writers.

This is why we need to get out there and colonize new worlds. As Kirk would say, young minds, fresh ideas...

BTW, you've probably posted this somewhere already, but when does your newest hit the stands? I'm gonna finish Judas Unchained in the next day or two and I'm loading up on reading material for my next trip...

In the case of someone like Vallejo, it isn't about being the best so much as setting the benchmark. Drop back a century, and Charles Gibson did the same thing (With ANKLES showing:soma:). Everyone took a cue from them and built on it.

^Brick&mortar bookstores probably won't start stocking it till after July 4th. But you can preorder online. ;)

And anyone in the vicinity of either Shore Leave, the San Diego ComicCon or WorldCon can get an autographed copy. :D
