Scrolling through the last week's threads, it has become apparent that our more liberal posters are really at a disadvantage when trying to defend their candidates via the "Well McCain is just as bad!!!" method. Their problem lies in the fact that no conservative Wordforgers appear to like McCain, and pretty much agree with them on any McCain critiques. Some of us may even get more animated in our hatred of McCain, thus further confounding them. So, in the name of fairness, hope, and dogs and cats living together, let all of our fervent McCainiacs go on record.
I wonder in how many cases that actually means they won't be voting for him, or whether it's just a strategy to immunize their choice against rational criticism. "Don't tell me he's the spawn of Satan, I know he is; I'm only voting for him because the other options are worse in some vague, indescribable way."
I think the poll is flawed. I don't like him, but I don't think anyone should be left in a prison camp. I just wish he would have never gotten involved in politics.
Uh no. At most McCain is a contemporary example of someone who's far, far worse when it comes to religious nutjobbery than oh, say Obama--who's definitely a little too scary for good people on religion, but not particularly due to his choice of church. He is, however, just a topical example; it's really the entire modern conservative movement, McCain included, that cozies up to religious zealots vastly scarier than Rev. Wright on a perpetual basis. The relationship between, for example, Reagan and Falwell, Robertson, et al. and the relationship between Reagan and avowed racists like Strom, were infinitely more damning for Reagan's efforts to harness rabid religious and racist buffonery as a key electoral strategy than is the fact that Obama's pastor said a few things over the course of a long career that show he's really pissed off, not worried about adhering to the dictates of conservative P.C.dom, and that he's probably not a particularly enlightened person on matters of race. You can have the right to complain about Obama's choice of pastor when you start shitting all over Reagan's memory for his fellating of racist and religious extremists and you acknowledge that Reagan was the far more likely racist theocrat than Obama. Until then, kindly shut the fuck up.
Yeah, the Republican Party (and you'll note I'm not using the word Conservatives) sucks up to the Bible-Thumpers. The Democrats do the same thing with miniorities, environmentalists, socialists, and every other group with an agenda and a mouthpiece and a blog. Republicans and Democrats are flip sides of the same coin. The only difference is that they are controlled by the special interests they pander to and the majority of Americans that want no part in their tomfoolery are held hostage, in large part because nobody has come up with a practical solution on how to fix that problem. Establishing political parties was the biggest mistake in American history.
And Carter was a proud born again Christian, who rallied those same evangelicals (Falwell, etc) with his anti abortion and evangelical positions.
I may be mistaken, but I don't recall reading anything that suggested Carter opening courted those folk. They did vote for him given his deep religious beliefs and personal opposition to abortion, but Carter kept his religion to himself, something those folks don't like very much.
Not according to Time... It's an article on Falwell, and does go on to say they parted ways. I also read an long article in the latest Reason that elaborated on Carter's courting of evangelicals. That piece is not online yet, but they do make this comment in another article.
I've been praying intently for his death for several months. God seldom answers my prayers though. Maybe someone else should give it a go?!
If we are to apply the same criteria that it seems is being applied for someone like Jeremiah Wright I'd say we can't call him a racist anymore.
