After entirely too long, I've recently done some sketchbook bits. Wanna see? Here's a couple of my superhero characters, Talon and Vega: This is a character from a space opera that's been rattling in my brain for years: And finally, if you remember the Colorforms Outer Space Men, here's my favorite, Astro-Nautilus:
I've started scanning my old sketchbooks. Here's some stuff from around 1978 - X-Men head shots! Cyclops: Wolverine: Phoenix: Banshee: Storm: More later.
And some more. Colossus: Nightcrawler: Note the completely screwed up proportions on Nightcrawler. His eyes are waaaay too far up on his face, for example. But, this was 1978, so I guess I shouldn't be too harsh on my much younger self. Here's a character of my own, Talon. This drawing is notable due to the use of pen and ink, which is not common in my sketchbooks, even in much more recent work. I hadn't figured out realistic anatomy or musculature yet. And this character wound up looking a bit different in his final form. Here's a quick sketch of a fighter pilot in a space opera movie I was planning when I was a kid: Didn't spend nearly enough time on the background and, truth be told, the figure isn't too great either.
Yeah, in the Outer Space Men collection, he was the guy from Neptune. That line of toys was just unbelievably creative. Surprised no-one has brought it back, especially considering the popularity of SciFi movies these days.
And more. This is Ruth, the White Dragon from Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series: The bronze dragon Mnementh from the same series: Another superhero in pen-and-ink. This one's named Ultra-Man (original, huh?) Still don't have anatomy or musculature right, and proportioning is off as well.
Years ago (1994 to be specific) I worked with a woman who at the time had a young child of around 5 or 6 years of age. This child had just discovered "Little Bunny FooFoo." Inspired, I did a four-panel illustration of the thing and gave it to her. Of course, it was my own twisted take on the nursery rhyme, but there you are. Bear in mind that these are low-res prints from low-res scans . . . at the time, the only scanner I had access to was a video scanner, and the printer wasn't much better. The woman I gave the originals to still has them, as far as I know. The sad thing is, I'm so out of practice now that I don't know that I could do stuff like this any more. The originals are pen & ink, markers, and watercolors on watercolor paper.
