https://foreignpolicy.com/2024/02/20/brazil-bolsonaro-coup-us-biden-democracy-election-chips-lula/ This is wild. Bolsonaro was really a ‘what if Trump was competent’ figure and was poised to execute an autocoup.
So I am torn on appointing Active Duty military to civilian government positions. I can definitely see the upside as in these are professionals who have been in charge of a large organization and could definitely have skills that apply to the job. I also see the potential downside. Again, I am torn when it comes to the concept of appointing military officers but I can definitely say that appointing SIX THOUSAND officers to positions in the government and in government owned businesses is wrong. That is just wrong. I’ll give you an NSAdmin or SecDef or showing my hand even SecState but SIX THOUSAND?!?!? SIX THOUSAND officers appointed to government or government owned positions. No way there aren’t enough capable civvies to fill those positions. Nope, nope, nope, nope…
To be clear, because I really want to lock this down. It is your belief that given the chance Biden SHOULDN’T have stopped an autocratic (and Trump ally, I’m sure that is completely coincidental to your stance) would be dictator from executing a military autocoup after he lost an election in the world’s seventh largest nation? That is your position?!?!?
Does our resident historian know the context of that speech? Specifically the Adams and Jefferson camps.
Yeah, what part of Biden is always wrong and Trump is always right even though he never voted for him don't you understand. If Biden solves any border problem he is wrong. If Biden creates an eternal power source with no downsides, he is wrong. If Biden makes world peace and joy happen, he is fucking wrong! I know the rest of us are not Trumpanzee cult 45 members, but could we please stop pretending there is any fucking chance in hell FF won't shit on a cure for cancer because Biden might be associated with it? Yes, this is always what FF means. He is a terrible human being who should be ashamed of himself but he will never be conciously aware of why he hates himself so much because he is a contradictory little ass goblin. It is OK Federal fuckstain, I already knew you would blame Biden for somethingf and spit on it just because That is why I think we should protecvt the world from your spit by wrapping your little head in a plastic bag. No one will let me do that because maybe you might do something good or learn how to not be a CHUD someday. I know you long for the comfort of an eterbnal ernd to the pain of being you, but they say it is wrong to silence your short circuiting neurological signals of pain. Anyway, how is your mom?
Yes. I wrote a whole entire paper on the Alien and Sedition Acts and the Quasi War as well as the lead up to British Invasion and I’m not talking about The Beatles. Furthermore, there’s another conversation about the Hartford convention, but Washington was long gone by then. Your point?
Why are you dodging a relatively simple question: do you think it was wrong for Biden to stop the coup?
We know your mom and the special ed teacher called it a paper, but in the real world we do not write papers in crayon and draw our own pictures. Another protip, when it is on your refrigerator that does not mean it was published or peer reviewed. Also the F is for fail, not for fabulous. Your mom really loved her little dumbfuck way too much.
For those of us without a subscription, can we get a summary? What’d Biden do? Warn Lula? Send in Special Forces? Delay a weapons shipment that Bolsonaro’s forces were depending on?
Weird. I’m not a subscriber and could read it. Maybe there is a ‘No just show me the article’ in small print you can click. Basically they had a contact give them a heads up and there was a full court press to make sure the Brazilian military know they would not get any US support if they staged an autocoup. And that they personally would not in fact benefit. Lloyd Austin was point and being an ex four star and having contacts apparently was a big help (again, part of why I am torn about officers serving in government - there are definite upsides).
Some sites allow "X free views". O2C strikes me as the sort who might click on links to their articles occasionally - enough to trigger the paywall. I do this with The Intercept on occasion.
The surprising thing here is that the United States intervened in Latin American on behalf of the person who won the election. Historically, it's usually been the other way around. And although "the U.S. using its influence is always bad" may be an appealing dogma for the simpleminded, I would argue that what you do with power does, indeed, matter.
And not just any election winner. An election winner who got his start in the Landless Peasants Movement!
Congratulations on the rangeban at foreignpolicy.com. A lot of us have been chasing that white whale for years.
