Is he actually restricted? I think that's a mistake, he'd get bored of the Starscape thing in a day or two, whereas actually blocking him from the Help Desk drags it out. Face wasn't hoping to get the Starscape rooms closed, he was hoping for a reaction.
Agreed. That's why I referred him to John. If he wants in, he follows the same procedure as anybody else. If he wants attention, we don't give it to him.
I figure after 24 hours I'll lift his thread posting ban. I warned him to knock off spamming in the HD or this would happen.
Guarantee that as soon as you let him create threads again he'll start pushing again seeing how far it can be escalated.
The Help Desk is for asking questions and fixing problems, not trolling or debating. On the subject of the Starscape Lounge I told John he could have a room for his members and I am not going to renig on that. If face doesn't like it he can start a Red Room thread. If he starts spamming the Help Desk again I'll remove his ability to post threads again, this time for longer.
He has a reputation to uphold, this is just territorial pissing. For the record I side with gul and bailey.
Do y'all think I should wait a few days so he'll have calmed down or do you think that would just build resentment?
I think he likes the attention. Therefore we should give him none. Re-grant him access, then leave it at that. If he opens another thread, so what? Aenea's thread hasn't been a problem. Hell, we just merge his with hers if he opens one on the same question. Then he doesn't even get the status of starting a thread in the first place.
The best thing to do with a Face Help Desk thread is answer whatever the question is seriously and "professionally" and then ignore anything else he does unless he asks another relevant question or some other poster does in his thread. Once there has been no activity in the thread for 3 days, lock it. Let him hump the topic in his thread. No one cares unless you do something that makes them care. The funny part is he didn't get the reaction I think he expected. I think he was trolling for a warning for calling the Starscapers pedophiles in the HD, not getting his thread closed. And that was completely ignored.
I'll give him access to Starscape Lounge if he wants it, but he'll be beholden to the rules there, and if he gets warned for breaking those rules (I'm pretty laid back, but also very protective of the people who post there), he can't come here. That's what the QS&F forum is for in the lounge. It keeps issues here at a minimum, and it prevents too much attention whoring as it's tucked away in our lounge.
Good luck with that...it's Face. He will try dragging it everywhere just to see how you react and handle it. Be prepared for the worst before letting him in. You know he's just dying to get in there and start calling people pedophiles in the Brony thread. Plan accordingly.
If he calls anyone in the Brony thread a pedophile, alludes to them being a pedophile, he'll be warned. If he does it again, he'll be warned again. If he does it a third time, he'll be kicked out of the lounge. Starscape's a lot more like the Green Room than the Red Room, and I'm pretty laid back, I don't like to give warnings. At all. In Starscape's 8 year history as its own board, I gave out a grand total of three warnings. I banned only one member in that time. Then again, the members there weren't out for trouble, for the most part. Still, if a member is trolling, and I know they're trolling, they're out. I don't believe in creating a board full of Enterpriser's, and I won't change the rules around one person to keep them around while letting everyone else feel more and more rules on top of their heads. What I have is what I have, and I'm happy with that rule set. Our little lounge is its own embassy, in a way, and everyone who enters in knows this. If they feign ignorance, I point to the rules they should have read upon entering. In other words, if he aims to misbehave, Face won't like it in there for very long. If he behaves, he's fully welcome to participate.
That's exactly what he wants, to have something he can point to and use to get attention. Creating multiple help desk threads isn't the problem, it's a symptom of the problem. You can mask symptoms, but doing so doesn't fix the underlying issue. I agree with Guls suggestion.
@Ancalagon, quick question: when you restricted Faceman, did you do this directly in his user settings, or was it in the Faceman group? Spaceturkey PMd me to say he can't create threads. I noticed that he and WAB are both in the Faceman group, and that for that reason, both of them are set to no for thread creation. Ironically, Faceman himself is no longer in the group. I removed Turkey and WAB, just want to be sure something else isn't going on.
Oops, didn't think anyone else was still in that group. That was my bad. I'm on my phone, is there a way to see who is in what usergroups?
It was just Spaceturkey and WAB, so I think everything's okay, because I removed them from the group. Turkey confirmed he can now start threads.
I wrote both We Are Borg and spaceturkey explaining what happened (I messed up a setting in the Kill List usergroup) and apologized. They took it rather well, I believe they thought I was joking.
