Terri Schiavo was a human, and non-sentient.
    Nice try though.

I remember Terry Schiavo being around the time my politics began truly changing. I remember looking at both sides of the issue, having been a fundamentalist Christian but apart from that being a person who valued life. Still, I could see it from the opposite side that it was a terrible thing to keep a human being alive when the rest of their mind was gone. I remember struggling back and forth on it, because there was compassion coming from both angles of the argument, at least with people genuinely invested in wanting the right thing done for her.

Of course, what was really going on was a lot of family pain, some greed, and a whole bunch of assholes getting involved where they shouldn't.

Oh, it's entirely possible to be human and non-sentient. That's why we don't have starships yet.

Fuckers like you and FF thinking this is cool:

The Schiavo case was a news story that merited the word “tragedy”. It not only took a toll on the participants, it took a toll on everyone who covered it. I only had to read reports as an anchor, but our lead reporter on the case was emotionally worn out. The judge in the case was superb. Judge George Greer rose to the occasion when some toadies from the GWB administration to stick their noses in the case. Judge Greer sent them crawling out of the courtroom like first year law students running out of Professor Kingsfield’s contract law class.

If I remember right, it also caused a portion of the Wingnut Brigade to decide that Hospice was evil incarnate.

For some that anger is simply misplaced. I am not saying all, but I am sure end of life carepeople face a lot of backlash from families who do not want to let go. It is understandable, but we cannot let other's grief stop what needs to be done.

There are people who would rather keep a brain dead loved one on a ventilator tell Hell freezes in the name of "protecting life". Weird, but whatever...but, when they try to impose that on other people using the power of government... :brood:

Conservatives love killing old people with financial booby traps, and dangerous medications.
There's just something about pulling a plug that makes it too real for them.
