Which will it be? "Fuck vegans," or "Landlords are always right and I will defend to the death their right to do anything they want"?

Vegan landlord seeks tenants for $5,750 New York apartment with period features. Meat eaters need not apply

A landlord in New York is reportedly refusing to rent out their apartments to anyone who cooks meat.

Michal Arieh Lerer is the owner of two one-bedroom apartments currently up for rent in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. The listings for each described them as spacious apartments with outdoor spaces and period details.

There is a catch, however. The “wonderful vegan landlord,” the New York Times quotes the broker as saying, wants “no meat/fish in the building”.

During an open house showing over the weekend, the broker reportedly told prospective tenants that “the owner lives in the building and doesn’t want the smell of cooking meat drifting upstairs”.

Lerer declined to speak to reporters. However, the NYT said Lerer’s ex-husband, who co-owns the building and is also vegan, claimed they had refused to rent to meat-eaters who cook since buying the property in 2007.

“It’s not about discrimination,” Motti Lerer said. “You have to fit into the building.”

According to the New York Post, the broker said that the tenants are welcome to order meat and fish-based takeaways, but the meals cannot be cooked on-site.

It’s not clear whether the two apartments have been rented out after the open house. The listing is still viewable on the real estate agent’s website.

Under New York City’s Human Rights laws, when landlords deny or approve a tenant’s application, they’re not allowed to consider 14 specific characteristics including age, race, or sexual orientation.

So far, dietary preference isn’t on the list. Therefore, Lerer’s move appears to be legal under human rights laws, as carnivores and omnivores are not covered under discrimination policies.

The listing has sparked a debate on social media, with some agreeing with the landlord’s decision and others recalling their own experiences with picky property owners.

The Dutch did this once. That landlord ministered their prime desire to eat him after the English, French, and some Germans rolled into town with little to no resistance...

this is no different than the 80s prejudice against south asians and west indians over curry

but vegans tend to be the epitome of white privilege anyways, so fuck this guy.

In this case I have to side with the landlord, despite the reality I would never rent from such an asshole problem landlord. It is just a sign your landlord is going to be spying on you, and that he is a nightmare.

He is only renting 2 units and they are really expensive so it is not like he is keeping meat eaters out of brooklyn. It is not discriminatory, but it is overwhelming intrusive for the cost. At that price if I want to cook myself a fucking burger and I can't, I am finding another place to rent.

I even get his reasoning to an extent. Maybe they bought the place so they could make that rule because the smell of meat cooking bugs them. Maybe the extreme cost is something some vegans want to pay to live away from the smells of some foods.

With 2 units and a huge pricetag I just do not see this person trying to make others in brooklyn forced to go meat free to rent a place. It is fucking brooklyn, if you don't like that rule on the two units then get another place.

I will say they look like some nice units from the pictures in the NY rag that made the article.

I think vegans get a bad rap from the militant assholes, sort of like non-smokers. I think there is also some right wing lies and resentment that falls on them that isn't true. I have met a number of vegans and vegetarians that do it for them. They will discuss it, and the reasons can make people feel like they are being accused of wrongdoing, but when you ask a person about why they would make such a move the reason might make you feel guilty. That isn't the vegan's fault unless they are pushing it on you.

Some vegan dishes are healthy and awesome. My sister's husband brought over this vegan lasagna that was awesome. Being diabetic of course I wanted it as they made the zuchini come out with the texture, look, and taste of noodles. I wish my sister would let him bring us more now that the picky grandparents are dead. I think she will because they always gave her the shit about having to eat meat.

Yes, the philosophy projects smugness and guilt. But after talking with orthodox jewish people in a pleasant manner and enjoying their company despite their views that they are the chosen ones, there is a way to do it without being preachy and turning others off, and when you meet the preachy militant boobs you just have to remember they exist on all sides. I have noticed NY Rabbis have this view that if you respect others and do not preach in their faces you have discussions that influence others without putting them on the other side playing defense. I think a lot of stealth vegans are out there living their lives without you even knowing.

Na, mass market veganism is pretty evil, like colonialism level evil.

Their trends tend towards locust like consumerism of regionalized food.. liek about ten years back when suddenly the folks who'd survived on quinoa for centuries couldn't afford it any more because guess where ALL the crops went...

Or how when one of the other few "working class" neighbourhoods here had to face of against a gentrifying BIA trying to rebrand Parkdale as "Vegandale" (how the fuck is that even catchy?).
The fact that there even is a culture around a dietary preference is level 5 Karening.

Just a thought on the unit, for that price you would want some better air filtration and separation between the units. If you can smell me cooking a burger in your place, I am pretty sure you are going to smell something when I bomb the toilet after a healthy portion of beans or dairy. God forbid I cook up some pot edibles. What about if I have a cat and a litterbox?

Fix your fucking place because meat does not travel like some of these other odors. Now where is my sausage scented candle?

According to the quoted bit, the only restriction is that meat can't be cooked on-premises. The tenants can still eat meat in the unit, it just can't be cooked there.

While I don't like it, I don't see how it's that much different than things like no smoking, no pets, no noise, or no overnight guests.
