Ok, so this may have strains of Flashlight weeded through it, but I've got a bit of a quandery here. Storm comes back, and gets a thread stickied saying that he'll put in $100 dollars of his own cash for every $100 someone else puts in to help shadow. Of course we all want to help Shadow out. I do too. But this all just seems very wrong to me. I have no doubt that Storm DOES want to help, but the manner he's going about it seems wrong to me. Why is this turning into a competition? Storm, if you CAN afford to give that much money, and are WILLING to, I encourage you to just do so. I don't know what you're trying to accomplish with that "matching donations" thing, but...it makes me feel uncomfortable. I'd say the correct thing to do in this instance is give till it hurts a bit. We don't have to compete with anyone, you know? I'm not trying to piss on anyone's charity here. I think the way everyone's come together over this is just great. It simply bothers me the way some of it is happening, and if it can spur on a bit of discussion, then so much the better for it I think.
I think Storm's not being competitive, he's just encouraging people to help out more. We raised quite a bit for Summerteeth's cancer run. I'd hope we could do just as much for Shadow.
Definitely does strike me as competetive, but what the hell is wrong with competition? There are religious folks out there who want to help partly because they believe their God tells them to. I don't share that belief, but it's fine with me if it makes them do nice things. Likewise, I have no problem with Storm turning this into his kind of game for himself; what counts is that it helps motivate him, and that's great.
Your logic is flawed, Crosis. It's an encouragement, an incentive to donate because people know their efforts will be doubled. This is exactly how large companies do it for telethons and the like. Kudos to you Storm.
If I'm the only one who sees it that way, I can accept I misunderstood the intentions, or maybe just don't "get it". it's a different mindset than what I'm usually accustomed to, but if everyone else is cool with it, then so am I.
The only reason you think of it as a competition, is because you really care what others think of you. This is a mistake. Just give what amount you want to/can afford, and fuck anyone who doesn't think it's enough. As for Storm's pledge, I was gonna donate a certain amount, but now that I've learned of this, it makes me seriously consider donating $100 instead. I think that's a good thing.
I saw it as a matching funds thing like Garamet said. I see it like he is letting it slip how generous he is and what he really thinks. What I find to be ironic (a funny) is how many people won't remember this when he starts in on his outlandish comments. They conveniently forget his good deeds and take his comments at face value, instead of seeing them for the bullshit that they are.
Not seeing any bad in Storm's post. Just proof that, despite what he'd like us to think sometimes, he's a decent human being. And maybe he's one of the few people round here who really is as rich as he claims.
Oh, I have little to no doubt that Storm actually believes everything he writes on this farm (except for when he's obviously joking). However, I also have no doubt that he would be the first one to step up to help any of his friends. Much as I disagree with much of his philosophy, I, in fact, do consider him somewhat of a friend, as I hope he does me.
I have no problem with it. You see this every day. Some guys says "I'll put up $100 towards that, who'll join me?" Not a thing wrong with it.
Normally, I'd be bother with Storm creating a new thread for it, but considering the direction the firs one went, the post probably would have gotten lost in all the I don't see what the bitching about, unless your issue is with Storm personally.
Reading comprehension seems to be an issue again - this isn't Storm offering to match single donations in some sort of "who's gonna give the most" contest: Important part bolded.
Keep in mind that I believe Storm's already donated $200 or so. He's just encouraging us to really get us to donate as well. By the way, when is the banner going to get updated? At the very least, to an announcement or something with instructions?
