I have a theory (as yet unproven until I get Gub'mint grant money) that the reason the South has (as Chris Farley used to say) "a bit of a weight problem".

Bear in mind I'm a Yankee by birth (Illinois) but have spent many years in The South (Alabama + Georgia).

I think many Southerners eat everything not nailed down because for many years THEY DIDNT HAVE SHIT TO EAT. Slaves never got enough food. The average white dirt farmer didn't have enough food. The backwoods hillbilly for sure didn't eat enough.

Once The South got their collective shit together, they ate like there was no tomorrow - because prior (but still in recent memory) generations knew all about going hungry, so it made sense to eat whenever you could - because there might not be food tomorrow.

Thus, old habits are hard to break.

Also, nothing in The South is within walking distance. Only a small portion of the biggest cities here in Georgia (Atlanta + Augusta) are walkable.
Shitty planning? You bet your ass, but nonetheless that's the way it is.
Land is cheap here housing is cheap here - so things are spread out.
Studies show walkable cities have thinner people.

California has a third of all the welfare cases in the country (with a tenth of the tax-paying population), and yet we still get less than even money back from the feds while you worthless fucking thieves make $1.30 on every dollar.

The South has their shit together. In twenty years every smart fucking business in California will move to Atlanta. Their customers/consumers will be every smart homeowner from New York/California who is sick of paying 3,000 dollars a month for a shoebox apartment.

There will be (already is in fact) a huge exodus to The South that will eclipse the great black migration to The North in the 1940's.

Anc, Flow, Garamet -- I'm curious about this. (The part about diabetes rates not going up along with poverty in the Rio Grande area.)

In my part of the country, there's a great deal of concern among public health practitioners about the high risk of obesity and diabetes in the Latino population. Why would that be the case here, but not along the Rio Grande?

I can think of two theories off the top of my head:

1. It's about education. People with more access to good information about nutrition are less likely to become overweight and diabetic, and people who speak the prevailing language in their area are more likely to have access to good information. A Spanish speaker in the Rio Grande Valley may actually be in the majority, and information distributed by public health officials in that area is likely to be readily available in Spanish. A Spanish speaker in the Midwest is likely to be in the minority, and most of the readily available health and nutrition information is in English. Therefore, if you look at two non-English speakers of similar economic status and education level, one who lives in the Rio Grande Valley will have better access to nutrition information than one who lives in the Midwest.

2. It's about geography and climate. Fresh fruits and vegetables don't grow in the Midwest for the majority of the year. They have to be trucked in, and the cheaper stuff is the processed stuff. In southern Texas, fresh produce is more likely to be cheap and readily available year round.

Do these make sense? Are there other, better explanations?

Kirk, that wasn't very nice. I like to think that as a person with a master's degree in a hard science I more then pay my own way in taxes. See when you are better educated you make more money and thus pay more in taxes.

Yes, a Master's Degree in Geology in indeed considered a hard science. If you went to college you might know that.

Alas, very few of Tardforge (and indeed very few dirty, inbred Southerners in general) have attained anything beyond high school degrees, even those paid for by urban tax dollars.

Any major that requires knowledge of the Mohs Scale pretty much has to be a hard science, yeah.
