When I was a teen me and my BF were approached by a cop and it was the only time I ever remember a police officer taking out his weapon and making me put my hands on the car. At the time I assumed it was because I had old school waterguns in the car that might have been confused for real guns, but in reality it was because my friend was black. I have had all sorts of encounters with police where I have had paintball, airsoft replicas, and real guns and they have never taken out their guns and made me put my hands on the hood. The only other time I have ever had police pull their guns on me was when I was arrested for my felony. Even then they put their guns away when I quickly surrendered and I just put my hand behind my back so they could cuff me. They frisked me, but they did not make me put my hand on the hood of the car or make me get face down on the pavement.

It is rare I even get out of the car at a traffic stop, but not for black people. I would be a lot more worried about a traffic stop if I knew I was going to be put on the ground, kneelled on, and cuffed face down while the police did their thing. Why are people even being removed from their cars for traffic violations? If you started cuffing white people during traffic stops while you searched their cars like they do with black people your cop ass would be fired. That is racism. That is harassment of black people by the police for white power. There is no other excuse for that.

To be fair, he was entirely right that I was pandering to pond scum and being tokenized by the likes of Volpone and Ramen and Sokar--the fact that the latter two thought lynch photos aimed at me were peak comedy after railing him for years over the incident speaks to that. We buried the hatchet on that ages ago, but again...it ain't a white person a place. Some shit gotta be addressed in house.

He was here right up until the day of the 2016 election, then just vanished without a trace. I hope it was just him noping out of dealing with Wordforge after all the crap from the Bush years.

Believe it or not we actually culled some of the worst ones when I first took on the position. These were the acceptable ones.

I know it's a common occurrence for Black people, but I've had that happen to me once in college. There were four of us driving on through Stanley County, NC, and one of us had to pee, so we pulled off the highway in Albermarle, and it wasn't two seconds and what had to have been every on and off duty Albemarle cop pounced on us. It was at least 10 or 12 cars that ran us off the road, boxed us in, and shut the whole road down. We weren't even speeding. So they all spill out, guns drawn, screaming at us to put our hands where they could see them.

So after a bit, we settled down, they settled down, and one of them starts questioning my roommate, who was driving. They were basically acting like he had been drinking, which he hadn't. None of us had...which, in and of its-self was unusual, but it was what it was. So every time he gave them the right answer to their question, they got more agitated and started escalating the situation. I had resigned myself that I was going to jail, when another LEO drove up. He was either a county sheriff's deputy or a state trooper, I forget which.

When he pulled up, every single one of those city cops reacted EXACTLY like a 12 year old caught smoking behind the school. They were all hands in their pockets, looking at the ground and kicking the dirt. The other cop came out of his car looking pissed off. He pulled the one doing the questioning aside, and read him the fucking riot act. He finally came over, gave my roommate a truncated sobriety check...it was just follow my finger without moving your head, and that was it...then told us to get the hell back on the highway, and don't stop until we get to the next county.

Every one of us was pasty white.

Having grown up in roughly the same area as you (IIRC), it was always a pretty diverse place (not just white and black, but a lot of people from various backgrounds in one big, flat, 110-degrees-in-the-summer melting pot). But even with all of that, one of my best friends from 2nd grade up through the end of high school was black, and there is a ton of shit that I've remembered over those 15 years that began to make sense to me in hindsight. While it was nice to have grown up without all of those preset racial overtones that other parts of the county have a history with (we were kids-from my point of view, who cares what someone's skin color is), I was still ignorant of what he actually experienced even when it was right in front of me, and he never made a big deal about it, but I wish I paid closer attention or was more tuned into it. Especially some shit I may have said that was pretty tone deaf.

My hope is that I am more tuned into it today, but I'll never be fully tuned into it the way someone who experiences it would be.

I've been that way all along, even when I was taking them to church every week it was passive, I didn't preach to them at home.

On the whole I still think that was wise but... damned if I don't catch them repeating too much garbage they heard on Youtube. (Gamers mostly but sadly gamer-adjacent Youtubers don't confine themselves to discussing games)

I'm sorry, but no one deserves that kind of criticism. If you have to resort to that sort of race-baiting to prove your point then at best, you're just not that clever. I remember that incident and I remember Liet being a user that I typically agreed with and respected but he was completely wrong and out of line to criticize you in that way. I believe I'm on record as stating as much at the time.

I called him out on it in PM, and all he did was give me sniffy justifications, and dig his feet in.

I actually grew up 45 minutes west of Sacramento in a more countryfied area. But Sac itself is incredibly diverse.

But yeah. I had a similar experience going out to dinner with my gay cousin and her girlfriend. They said people were giving them looks but even for as knowledgeable as I consider myself to be on queer issues, I didn't notice.

Early one Saturday morning (or maybe late on a Sunday morning), I went to breakfast with my military roommate and her girlfriend and GF's younger brother. It was one of those all you can eat breakfast buffet things down in GA. Well, I've got my plate, I've salted everything, I'm about to dive in, when roommate says to me "Hey, Adams, look around." ... I look around, then back at her, "at what?" and she's like "everyone is looking at you." and I immediately start looking at my clothes (all there and correctly worn), touch my hair (doesn't feel weird). Now I'm out of patience "WHAT?!" and she's like, "you're the only white person at this table". I just rolled my eyes and started eating.

It was probably for when we had more international posters, or just y'know more posters in general.

I don't think that was the intent. When the story begins with a statement that police abuse is more common for Black people, I don't see how you can interpret it as an argument that police racism doesn't exist.

All cops are bastards, and if they can find a black guy or Latino to harrass, they'll settle for white kids or women.

I don't think that's the point. The point, IMHO is that there seems to be some sort of "Police-Industrial-Complex" where if they don't have a purpose or need, they can and often simply invent one... mostly at the expense of black and brown folks, but if none are available, you'll do just fine. While police reform will definitely help minorities, it will help us all.

Technically, the statement was "common occurrence for Black people," not "more common."

But even if you meant to concede that police misconduct was more common to Black people, it's not an unreasonable position (though not one I'm taking, to be sure), that sharing the anecdote about the time police misconduct happened to you as a White guy is a) taking the focus off of the disproportionate nature of misconduct and drawing attention to you as a White person, which is arguably racist and b) meant to emphasize that police are equal-opportunity committers of misconduct.

What it boils down to is the all-too-common belief in the police community that a badge is a license to be an asshole.
