Jericho somehow, against all odds, got good and totally ruined my ability to snark on it. The beyond stupid yocals, the lame relationship melodrama, the screwed up priorities, all dropped. In strolls Major Beck - who, against every Hollywood cliché about the military, is smart, capable, and principled - and he quickly puts the dumb little Springfield-Shelbyville shooting war to an end like an exasperated parent. The theme of the show has shifted from post-apocalyptic to government conspiracy which is a good thing. Fears about nuclear terrorism and mega-corporation defense contractors match the national zeitgeist a tad better than a small town trying to figure out how they'll celebrate Halloween after the nuclear apocalypse.
I'm amazed as well. I missed the first few episodes after the beginning. Then I saw one episode and got hooked through the end of its season. It's actually interesting now! I'm looking forward to next season. Took a while to figure out which government is supposed to be the "bad guy" but now that I know it makes the show easier to understand.
I loved the character development and story arcs in season one, and I'm liking the conspiracy story in season two. I think the second season is just as good as the first, and is probably less complex, so that allows more new viewers to start watching. Too bad there might not be a third season.
That abomination of a flag didn't give it away? The show has really gotten better now that's it's focused on the government conspiracy, unfortunately it looks like it might be canceled again.
Finally saw the season 2 opener. And I've gotta agree with all the kudos you guys have said. Esai Morales is great casting as the Major.
I'm glad this show gotten it's priorities straight. As it was for the first half of the show, it reminded me too much of CBS's daytime lineup with all that melodrama. Especially that little stupid bitch Skylar Stevens. Did she die in the shoot-up in the season finale of season one? PLEASE tell me she bit it.
I'm two episodes away from finishing S1 of this show. Sounds like some more good stuff and some different tracks are in store for S2. I read an internets rumor that there might be a Jericho movie in the future, but who knows. All I can say is...DAYUM! I've gone through S1 in about 4 days... This is the ultimate SHTF TV show! They've taken some liberties and glossed over some probable inaccuracies with regards to radiation and fallout and such, but I totally forgive them. This ain't The Day After or On the Beach. This is....JERICHO! [/Leonidas] Love Jake, love Hawkins, Love Gerald McRaney, and love both Mary and the hot blond chick- stereotypical Kansas farmgirl prom queen type!! Makes me want to move to some pissant tiny town like Idaho City...
One thing this show (which is actually rather mild in its depiction of the post-apocalypse) is that I haven't stocked up on nearly enough guns yet.
Just finished S2- didn't realize it was only half a season. Can't completely agree here. S2 of Jericho was a Catch-22. In S1, you had a ton of GREAT characters and great character building, and they all bonded together to defeat adversity in the face of the balloon going up. However, they DEALT withe local problems in S1, at least for the most part. A S2 that was just a rehash of S1 would have, well, kind of sucked. The neat thing about S1 was that by the end you were totally in love with the characters and then watching them deal with the heartbreak in S2 just put you right there with them. S2 was the next logical step: the government steps back in, only it's not the REAL government. I thought that aside from SNR company being behind EVERYTHING, they definitely had the right idea with multiple areas claiming to be the seat of the government and the whole balkanization scenario. For me the biggest drawback of S2 was the loss of characters like Johnston and the 'small town' feel of things being supplanted by the whole 'Oh shit, it's us against the WHOLE WORLD' vibe that came in later. I liked Jake's character okay but sort of felt Hawkins stole the whole series in S2, and Major Beck was a great addition. Jake's relationship with the blond was just kind of left out in the cold as well, but I didn't mind that too much. Stanley and Mimi's hilarious but touching relationship was much more fun to watch even if you could see it all coming a half-season away. I thought the finale was great and it definitely left the door open for future endeavors. The only problem was that the 'future endeavor' was going to be a second civil war that would have affected the town of Jericho but probably not as directly (unless the war rolled directly through). There were still some bad guys at large, too. I heard this series was going to be continued in comic format. As a comic-lover I may give it a whirl, but a lot of times such transitions just flat out fall on their face, depending on which company picks up the rights and who is doing the writing.
