Wide commercial use of such batteries will probably drive sugar prices through the roof. Like corn-based methanol for cars, it looks good in the lab, but the economics of mass production have a serious impact on the price of the raw ingredient.

On a side note, this could be the core technology for robots that feed themselves. Imagine a robot that stops every few hours for a swig of syrup, or if operating in the wild, eats berries and fruits as it finds them.

Sweet! It could actually be possible to build predatory robots. Kill. Eat. Gain energy.

Does that mean we will start to see supercharged hybrid ants? bionically powered by eating batteries?
