    Liberal democracy has been advancing all over the world for centuries and is almost ubiquitous at this stage. I think it is you who has a problem with his worldview if you think it impossible in Syria for all time.

    Depending where it is, one could argue that the Cold War was folly, and we should have just been isolationist during those years, and hoped for the best.
