I can't fucking wait for this!

20 years ago i was 16 so just in impressionable age. This film whilst it didnt spawn a generation of junkies, certainly was the student super hit for the next decade. Instantly quotable, the big poster all over student unions and halls of residences. Of course it was never a great cultural advert for our great wee country, but it was such a mega hit.

All cast now reunited, loosely based on 'Porno', soundtrack looks to be as good as good as the original, lots of teasers such as reusing the set of the small room with trains on the wallpaper where Renton was locked for cold turkey.

Watching that teaser brought it all back, tingles just like the starwars one did.

    Bring on january.

And once its out, if anyone needs a translation, just ask.

Incidentally, i was travelling SE Asia and reading the book Porno in 2003 when we all migrated to WF!

Trainspotting set the bar pretty fucking high so it's safe to assume this won't be nearly as good as the original but I am super stoked to see Rents and the boys on the big screen again.

Awesome that it's Danny Boyle again too, that at least gives me hope that it will be better than decent.

I have a similar disposition to this, having loved the first movie (I must have spent half of my uni years quoting it and doing the impersonations) and read almost all of Irvine Welsh's books.

Going by the trailer, it does manage to have (re)captured the feelign of the original. Can't wait.

"So I squares up to him, casual like..."

The novel Porno isn't quite as wonderful as Trainspotting is, but there are quite a few bits I hope end up in the script, mostly involving Franko.

I read it once 13 years ago but Franko's introduction still sticks in my mind. Renton peering under the toilet stall and seeing the white socks.....

I don't find it remotely "sad". It's riotously entertaining. I'm not sure what film you were watching...

I really enjoyed the first "Trainspotting" film (1996), & look forward to this film as well.

It's good that Danny Boyle is the director this time round too.

Given how the American entertainment diet is, or at least was, all about sacerine stories and happy endings, I can image that....

...would be viewed as pretty depressing across the pond. In fact I can't say I ever regarded it myself as riotously entertaining either. With the exception of Renton the main characters are tragic figures and for me it plays more like a bittersweet comedy drama.

Bump, since I've just seen it.

Decent film, but doesn't really come close to the original in terms of capturing the zeitgeist, having as much to say or in terms of sheer vitality.
Some cracking scenes but also too much fan-service. And as much as I appreciate Begbie's madder moments, he almost reaches monster-movie dimensions here at times, which is going too far. I did like

Real life got in the way the last few weeks so I only finally caught this lastnight.

It was good, not perfect and certainly not the era defining romp of the first one but for a 20 year revisit it was more than good enough. It certainly didn’t have the in your face energy of the original but sitting back the whole message throughout it was one of reflection on missed opportunities and life being passed by. I suppose keeping with that theme, you couldn’t really inject the energy as much.

Whilst the film is good, there are some great scenes that stand alone. Renton’s updated choose life monologue, Begbie and Spud reliving the glassing scene from T1, the parole scene, Begbie and Renting meeting in the toilets and above all, the scene in the masonic lodge in Glasgow. It’s hilarious but what makes the scene funny is that if you have ever ventured into one of these clubs you know that after a few drinks, the scene is not really too far fetched.

Lots of clips from the original made their way into this film too which was a nice touch, helped setting the scene and showing the passing of time. Renton sitting with his dad in the kitchen, cut to T1 and Renton sitting in the same spot with both parents, Spud reliving the famous run through Edinburgh in the original.

The other uncredited star of the film, at least for the first half was Edinburgh itself. They certainly went to town on location shots. Edinburgh Airport, Trams through Princess Street, the Castle looming in the background, Big iconic scenes on a beautiful day on top of Arthurs Seat…… the location shots petered out from about midway but they were good.

Overall, enjoyed it. Probably didn’t love it and quite sure I’ll never watch it as many times as I have seen the original but it was a nice diversion. If you have read the book Porno on which this is loosely based, you will see they have diverted quite a bit from it. With the ending, I doubt they can make the third instalment true to Welsh’s book ‘The Blade Artist’, but you never know what they can think up for another 20 years.

Around that same time, Ben Stiller was in a movie called "Reality Bites," which had similar Fuck the Man themes only involving rich twats who knew Mum and Dad would bail them out of their dumbassery and nothing of value is learned.

I'd rather take this film over that pretentious crap any day.
