Terrorist Attack on Mosque in New Zealand

Still developing, but a terrorist has struck at a mosque in Christchurch, opening fire on people engaged in prayer.

The killer didn't hide his identity, even live streaming the attack on Facebook (I saw it pop up on my feed, don't seek it out)

No official casualty tallies yet, but it's going to be big.

He posted his manifesto to his Twitter account. In it he agrees this is a terrorist attack, but considers it justified.

Terrorist is Australian and as well as live streaming the attack, posted on 8Chan just before carrying it out.

I had to look to be honest, but they're stricter than the US but looser than most of the first world. Guns by and large are allowed provided you qualify for a license but self defense is not a sufficient reason to discharge one.

It's worth pointing out of course that this is a singularly unusual event in NZ, the last similar incident having been the Armoana incident 29 years ago.

Considering those facts and doing so in light of the fact US' rate of consistently more than one per day I think it's pretty disingenuous to use this as evidence of the failure of stricter gun controls. Surely the fact this is such a comparatively rare event should be more informative.

Yes several guns is overkill (no pun intended) when one spare could be warranted if you are worried about Murphy's law kicking in.
That many guns would slow you down if - for whatever reason - you had to stay highly mobile.

I can't figure out what kind of twisted, evil thoughts run through these shooters' heads. One of these days a crazed mass shooter will be seconds away from pulling the trigger and think "wait a minute! What am I doing? Regardless of their ideology this group of people are unarmed and are thus no threat to me, and have conveyed no threat to me. I am just demonstrating that my own ideology is violent and dangerous by killing innocent people! I'll just turn the gun on myself because I am the threat that should be eliminated!"

Sadly that still hasn't happened yet as far as I know.
