My wife came home today. HR sent her a letter explaining how her health insurance premiums triple on Jan. 1 AND our out-of-pocket expenses (e.g. co-pay, medicine, out of network visits) go up. Thanks Obama! We get hit with the end of the Bush tax cuts AND our health insurance goes up. We couldn't have done it without you!
There is absolutely nothing in the recent health care legislation that causes or encourages premium increases like these. The cost to insurers of providing you the same insurance coverage hasn't gone up any more than usual. However, insurance company investments have sure tanked in the last couple of years, meaning negative investment income, and meaning that more of the money to run an insurance company has to come from somewhere else. There are also probably some insurance companies out there playing politics, raising premiums more than needed to cover lost investment income and normal cost increases, hoping you will mindlessly blame Democrats and vote Republican, but that's because some insurance company executives are partisan hacks.
Sokar's so dumb that he's not actually lying; he believes what he says. That still doesn't mean that the premium increases some people are seeing now are the result of anything more than opportunism and investments gone bad. If it were the case that this had anything to do with the recent health insurance legislation 1) people would be able to point to something in the legislation that caused the rate hikes and 2) the hikes would be pretty uniform rather than completely spotty. Sokar's probably too dumb to understand that insurance companies don't just sit on cash but rather invest it, and when investments go bad and they have payments to make they've got to raise capital somehow. There's nothing even a little controversial about that.
Because now having to take everyone with preexisting conditions that applies for insurance and keeping 26 year old "children" on parents plans is just a cost insurance companies just absorb without passing the costs on to those with plans, right? The insurance plans are recouping losses they know are abount to happen before they even kick in.
