That Reporter the Israelis Waxed a Couple Day Back...

Here's the last few seconds of footage from his camera. The tank fires a flechette round at him. It's alike a giant shotgun shell with a crapload of darts inside and really good for killing unarmored folk.

If I'm sitting in a tank and I see you put something on your shoulder that may or may not be a rocket launcher, you are going to die. The lesson here is he was stupid and stupidity kills.

I consider acceptable when someone dies because of his own stupidity. That tank crew had no way of knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt what he was putting on his shoulder. No way I'm going to fault them for eliminating a threat to their safety.

Couldn't tell ya about that, but by now the media needs to understand that aiming a camera at soldiers in a combat zone is extremely dangerous. A guy I knew in the 3rd ID came within an eyelash of shooting a camera man that was doing this same thing. It looks a lot like an RPG.

Also, before anyone cries that the vehicle was marked PRESS or whatever, note the terrain the car was in. Hilly with plenty of vegatation. That tank probably couldn't see the markings. If you're in a tank in a warzone and see a truck pull into a gully, a couple of guys get out and put something on their should and point at you, are you going to :

A) Assume they are bad guys meaning to do you harm

or

B) assume they are the media?

The lesson here is know your terrain and don't do anything to provoke the tank that can kill you deader than dogshit.

Hoisting something on your shoulder and pointing it at a tank is really not a good idea, though.

The ending of that tape is rather...sudden. The time between the flechette round bursting and the tape ending is less than a second.

Wow, that's a slow-moving round.

Still, five years in and, AFAIK, they still haven't developed a 120mm beehive round for our tanks (or a real HE round) even though the troops have been asking for them since the beginning.


Speaking as someone who's done both of the jobs in question here, when this story broke the other day I immediately thought, "Dumbass photog!"

I always wanted to see one of those beehive rounds the redlegs have for direct fire in action.

He was standing next to a car with Big letters that said TV.

Look at the terrain. See the hills? The bushes? You think the tank could see the car marking clearly behind a bush?

It's probable that the camera itself swallowed a bunch of flechettes at the same time as its owner. That would tend to shut down its operation pretty fast.

, though I'd bet several hundred dollars that the camera was on a tripod. The shot is too steady when it's at its longest focal length to be handheld.

The tripod still doesn't change anything, though.




It is morbidly cool to see a beehive round in action, especially from the receiving end.

105mm beehive rounds (which is what I'm betting this was) have a dial setting on the "warhead" that you set for the range of your target. Unless you set it for "muzzle action" (where it truly does act like a shotgun round), the round doesn't "burst" until it gets to the range the loader dialed in.
