I saw it Saturday. Without giving anything away, it's brilliant. Vintage Scorcese, right down to the editing and the music. I don't know if this will be the movie that finally gets Marty his Oscar, but it'll be a crime if he doesn't at least get nominated.
I was pissed that I had to fly back the week this movie opened, the trailers looked awesome. I hope he finally gets his Oscar. God knows he deserves it.
Saw it. I can't write a worthy review, so I won't bother. 9.8 stars. Oscar Worthy. If this one doesn't to it for Scorcese there's no justice in this world or the next. Go see it. That's an order.
Yeah, I'm pumped about it. Martin's the MAN. Of course, getting the best acting talent helps a movie too. So, is DiCaprio his "go to" guy now, like DeNiro was for years?
You know the funny thing? After all the Abrham's rumors I kept having these moments where I was looking at Damon and trying to imagine him in a gold tunic and braid, playing Captain Kirk.
Oscars suck. He's better off without one. The Departed wasn't his best ever, but it's his best in ten years.
Wait, you've got to be kidding me? This came out TWO months ago in the US? Why again is anyone wondering that people download movies?
finally saw it, very kick ass, IMO! For those who are interested, I thought it was probably the most accurate on-screen portrayal of Boston since Good Will Hunting. Damon and Whalberg were both very typical Boston cop, including the accent. DiCaprio came close on that count, too, though he didn't have the inside edge like the other two. Sheen and Baldwin missed most of the time, but otherwise played their parts well. Nicholson, well, he's Jack Nicholson. Would we really want him to portray somebody else? Of course, the movie makes it seem like the whole city is controlled by the Irish mafia, which is untrue, and in fact the mafia's grip began a significant decline about ten years ago, even in the neighborhoods it did infest. Still, a great mafia movie, deserving to be placed on the same list as Godfather (1 and 2) and Goddfellas. What we really need to see now, is a Star Trek movie directed by Scorcese.
Saw this last night. It wasn't BAD, but it certainly was no Goodfellas... Maybe I had too high expectations from all the hype, but I wasn't overly impressed.
I just... acquired... last week and got around to watching it last night. It didn't blow me away, thought it was definitely one of the better movies to come out in the longest time. Definitely didn't see that whole ending coming, though!
Saw the movie last week. I thought it was a great film. I always figure the sign of a really engaging film is when 2.5 hours go by and it feels like no time at all has passed. But I have to say I'm not sure if it was worthy of the "Best Picture" Oscar. Then again, not much has been of late.
The only other nominee I saw this year was Little Miss Sunshine. That too was good, but if I had been voting, I'd have picked The Departed. I agree, there should have been an even better choice available, but the Academy has to work with what it gives to itself.
Very good film, but not bettter than Casino or Goodfella's. Also, in terms of recent films, i thought both last king of Scotland and Blood dimond were better.
Most fun I've had in a long time while watching a movie. The mob and the police have moles counter-acting one another and in the end, the biggest mole of them all shocks everyone. DiCaprio has come a long way since Titanic... And does Jack Nicholson blow you away or what? Great movie... I ... acquired... it at first and then went out and bought my own copy because it was so good.
I liked it better than Casino, about the same as Gangs of New York. Of course, nothing compares to Goodfellas, and never will IMO.
No one from the production seems to be conferming 100% because that would be a plot point of the sequil they are talking about doing...
[?=MEGA-SPOILER]No, I think he's talking about the dirty cop who kills Di Caprio and the other cop.[/?]
Hmm, if Whalberg was a mole, who was it for? It doesn't seem like he was working for Nicholson. Otherwise DiCaprio wouldn't have survived as long as he did.
actually, the movies this film was adapted from was a triology. Talk at the moment is that the sequil will follow the whalberg charecter and his interaction with Jack Nicholson's charecters brother, a "legit" politician who used to run cover for his brothers antics. Early talk is that the brother charecter will be played by Robert De Niro. Also, if the studio does green light the sequel, it will produce green light a third film makeing the saga a triology, with the third film being a prequil which will bring back all the charecters from the first and second films and cover events that lead up to the first movie.
That would make for an interesting sequel, and would definitely make a case of life imitating art. Nicholson's character was loosely based on Whitey Bulger who avoided death by going on the lam. He is currently residing next to OBL on the FBI's most wanted list. As he rose through the ranks of the Boston mob, eventually becoming the kingpin, his brother Billy Bulger worked his way up through government, eventually becoming state Senate president, followed by a stint as University of Massachusetts president. There is some thought now that Billy was helping Whitey all along, and of course Whitey was working the FBI with half assed information, while the FBI in turn purposefully ignored the many murders Whitey and his Winter Hill gang committed. I always wanted to see that story fictionalized in the Star Trek Verse. Why doesn't anybody write a good Federation mafia novel?
