Save that I hadn't because I have already been discussing the episode on Gallifrey Base. Nice try though.
My theory is that it's time war Doctor. In the Time War we know it was brutal and that the Time Lords were willing to play nasty. So this version of the Doctor did awful things in the war as a soldier. At some point he regenerated into 9 who promptly went "what the hell am I doing?!" and ended the war with the time lock.
Finally saw it. Bloody hell, that was good. The one thing that's really impressed me with nuWho is the caliber of guest stars they've managed to acquire over the years. With John Hurt we've also seen Timothy Dalton, Michael Gambone, Sir Ian McKellan, Simon Pegg, and a slew of other big-named British thespians that elude me at the moment. John Hurt has always kicked arse, and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us with his version of the Doctor.
Ian McKellen is the voice of The Great Intelligence. Simon Pegg was in series 1 as the editor on the broadcasting station.
I'm voting future doctor, that Eleven now knows because he jumped into his own timeline. We saw references to both Eight and Nine in this episode, so I don't see this being a retcon. I'm sure I'm wrong though.
