The point being, I think he's missing out on stuff.

But nobody should try to make him experience stuff, because that's tantamount to forcing democracy on another country. It's contrary to the goal.

To put it bluntly, what Dicky does with his life will by default be what HE wants to do. Our opinion is besides the point.

If you didn't care, it would provoke no reaction. but it always does - just as the inference that ALL actions taken in the name of religion always provokes one from me.

    you care alright.
If you wanted friends, you would not be a complete ass to people when you disagree with them. IMNSFHO, anyone who hands out all the rabid bullshit you do to those you disagree with, instead of just saying - "ya know, I think you're wrong about that" - is in one hella piss-poor position to :sob: because someone doesn't treat him as a friend.

Even when we go in chat and have a nice amiable conversation about life the universe and everything and nod respectfully to each other, you go directly from there to here and return to the "Hail Daicanu! Conquer of Stupid Fundies!" person as soon as possible.

    Yeah.
I'm sensing the whole "If you were my friend" vibe really strong...

    honestly?

    you aren't?
People find a perceived weakness and attempt to exploit it.
surely such a student of human nature as you profess to be realizes that?
and your usual response - a passing derisive comment at most - is the appropriate way to minimize such a tactic's effect.

A crying thread OTOH is just going to ramp things up again because the very existence of this thread says to your critics "yes, I'm going to admit you get under my skin with that"...no matter how much you might deny that within the thread itself.
Probably pretty much the same thing I'm supposed to feel when you confidently assert that I am the epitome of ignorance because I don't share your worldly-wise views.
Or maybe what I'm supposed to feel when you refer to me as...what was it again? - a steaming pile of shit or some such?

Again, I'm getting a real sense of just how much you apply this whole "if you were my friend you would behave in such&such a manner" bit to your OWN persona.

    a logic buff!

    Heh.
    well, Okay, where were we?

    Oh yeah.

Well, here's the most obvious thing. People learn by doing. Trial and error, Failure teaches lessons, all that stuff.

When a person who's life experience is, BY THEIR OWN TESTIMONY highly limited and, what experience they have had is BY THEIR OWN TESTIMONY well outside the norm...
THEN when said person offers their views on, for instance, raising children, or any number of other subjects - it is only natural for those who HAVE tried their hands at the subject at hand might be a bit derisive about the advice of the one who hasn't.

That derisive tendency is often, of course, a reflection of your own acerbic attitude.

Further, there's the whole underlying issue of the theoretical versus the applied.

You can sit in your cocoon and theorize that everything from the schools to the congress to the rest of the fuggin race is beneath you - but those of us who have had the courage to get out in the big bad world and try to scrape and scrap for our existence rather than receive it from the hands of others for a decade or more longer than we were - by any argument - entitled to are much more likely to be impressed by APPLIED wisdom than theoretical wisdom.

So, when the King of the Untried Theoretical Opinion (KUTO! Maybe I just gave you a new nickname!) comes into a conversation and confidently assure you of his own intelligence if not wisdom and slams you as too stupid to draw your next breath if your jaw wasn't so slack then...well...let's just say said egotist invites derision upon himself.

shepherd does other things with his time beside sitting and refreashing the Red Room home page every 30 seconds in case there is a reply he wants to argue with.

hell, sometimes I even do crazy stuff like get off line, sleep for 6 or 7 hours, then drive an hour to work and stay there nine hours and drive an hour home and then eat some supper and even kiss my wife before rushing breathlessly back to Wordforge to say what new inanity has spilled from the keyboard of some of you fools.

Crazy way to live, I know.

I'm posting before reading all the posts (because it is cold out and the computer has to sit on the windowsill to get the internet, and so I'm downloading 100 posts at a time), but...

D, I know what you mean, but that's what people do. It would be cool if we could have totally intellectual discussions without revealing anything about ourselves, but then we would be less real to each other I think. As it is, everyone here is 'not-real' enough to me (no offense, I just have hard time with having conversations not face-to-face with people). We live in a materialistic world. Tasvir likes telling everyone he's rich, and none of us care (except that it's annoying after the first 10,000 times). You enjoy telling us how much you don't care what people think about you. You just have to realize that we all do have different points of view--it's just as hard for me to imagine myself living with my parents and doing whatever it is you do as it is for you to imagine wanting to get a Ph.D in Paleontology. Some of us are driven by money, some for knowledge, and Uncle Albert is driven to telling people that he doesn't care to know anything about them. You are driven to ignore everything that the rest of the world finds important. Why? I have absolutely no idea, because my mind doesn't work that way. I'm a pretty contrary person, but I don't do it just because it's the opposite of what everyone else does--I'm not saying you are either, but that's what it seems like a lot of the time. There are people here who do want you to be happy, but most of them have given up on trying to convince you to 'go out and do something with your life' because you just DON'T. It gets annoying thereafter when you decide to make a point of the fact that you have different ideals than the rest of us.

Well, for one, it's not like I can just snap my fingers and have wheels, and two, "convincing", me ain't the dealbreaker.

    I'm convinced.

    I'm shitloads of convinced.

But, all the willpower in the universe isn't gonna make the crap that's going on right now go any faster.

Hmm, think you're misinterpreting my wording there.

I'm not pleading for people to be my friends.

I know who my friends are.

The jagoffs my opening rant apllies to don't fit the bill.

    The rest, heard it before.

EDIT-Oh, and Shep, you're the last person to deserve to nail himself to a cross over anything I said to you, you said things to me, that if your religion is right, you deserve to go to hell for.

So, save me the violin music.

I never ever said anything nasty to you until you put me on your list.

If you have some difficulty recieving in-kind replies then maybe you need to re-think a few things.

Oh, and BTW, I continue to be unimpressed by the theological obseravtions of those who consider the whole thing rubbish.

I did not be-little it. I suggested the man who did so was in denial about his orientation.

That you mistook my meaning is not an example of intentional unkindness.

I do not disagree, but what MY point is - in what ways does it make a person stronger? Is 'strength' a definition of physical powers, or are there mental powers involved as well? If so, why would a person have less mental power if he did not face any hardships in life?
