http://shine.yahoo.com/event/momentsofmotherhood/failure-is-impossible-for-high-school-students-no-really-2410739/ We are now telling the kids they can't fail - so why work hard? Well, it was bound to happen; after all we've been telling them for years that they didn't have to work to get money.
Yeah, this "Everyone ith a WINNERRRRRRRRRR!!! " bullshit has been going on for awhile now. This is just the latest half-step in a slow but determined progression toward noncompetition (and therefore complacency)
I worked hard for my fucking high school GPA and I'm working damn harder to fix my college one (Advanced Calculus and Physics aren't my thing) so that I can be successful and live the life I want to, not so I can pay ridiculous taxes so people who didn't work hard can live the life they want to.
But...but...if you're successful, it will hurt the self-esteem of those who aren't. After all, they would have done as well as you...if they had the ambition, the perserveance, the work ethic, the desire to learn, etc. Surely we can't punish our fellow citizens who are unable to work as hard as we do by denying them the fruits of our labor...
Just to be faaaiiirrrrrrrrrr you should be able to share some of your outstandingly high GPA with those who deserve it. Don't you caaarrrrrre?
I don't like this at all. Colleges can get away with alternative grading if you have a small, motivated student body. But for a high school? Terrible, terrible idea.
What in the fuck is wrong with people these days? Look, the world isn't perfect - it's never going to be - but we've managed to build up quite a remarkable fucking society full of incredible acheivements and we did all that while failing kids in school who deserved to be failed. Failure used to mean you had to work harder, and in a lot of cases it's been beneficial to fail people as it lights that fire under their ass they so desperately need. It's remarkable the wackos who don't want to "harm" kids with F's don't see the long term damage they're doing.
Feelings have become more important than learning in schools...we are screwed unless we reverse that thinking really quick.
"When I'm done having fun, I'll sell my toys so everyone can be super. And when everyone is super, no one is." ~Syndrome, The Incredibles
No offense but this mentality is misguided. How hard you worked isn't very relevant. If you have mastery of the subjects, it doesn't matter whether it came easily or with difficulty. Lots of students get through high school with good grades and little effort.
I don't really understand why everyone is so bent out of shape here. Does giving failing kids a letter "I" instead of an "F" really diminish the value of the "A" that the other kids get? Really the question here is whether demonstrating competency by a certain arbitrary test date is important, or whether it's just important to have demonstrated it before the end of the year.
Yes. I = incomplete; you didn't finish everything to get a passing OR a failing grade. F = you completed the task. You didn't pass, but you completed it.
