The school systems can't stand it to get their last digs in to students who are graduating. Typical bullshit, punish the students for something their parents or other visitors do during graduation ceremony. If I was one of the students, I would tell them to stick the diploma up their ass and if I were on of the parents I would pay a personal visit to the principal and see if he isn't due some dental work. Those kind of people get drunk on their own authority and think they have power everywhere, but forget that they might not have so much authority when they happen to run into someone in the pickle aisle at costco ;)http://news.aol.com/topnews/articles/_a/illinois-students-lose-diplomas-over/20070601155509990001?cid=2359

Perhaps some sort of dance around a fire with drums beating would expend their energy before the commencement.

Schools generally advise the students on just this thing before graduation. Why should anyone be surprised when they carry it out?

That's bullshit. If a classmate doesn't like a kid, he can get friends in the audience to scream so that kid is denied a diploma? You have no control over who screams. I'd tell them to stick the certificate up their butts. I'm not doing community service, not even for 8 hours.

Oh really? Since when? This is the first time I've heard of anything like this. Students and family ALWAYS cheer when the diplomas are passed out.

Doesn't matter. How is it the student's fault? They are being punished for the actions of others they have no control over. That shit doesn't fly outside the military.

Because of this little bit right here.

In Galesburg, the issue has taken on added controversy with accusations that the students were targeted because of their race: four are black and one is Hispanic. Parents say cheers also erupted for white students, and none of them was denied a diploma.

Indeed. Once the school talks this one over with its lawyer, you can expect some diplomas to be printed up right quick.

I suppose you're right. They should just hold up announcing the next graduate until the cheering dies down and the graduate's name can be heard.

While requiring everyone in the audience to remain standing while the graduates are announced, out of respect.

This thread title reminds me of an article up on the NYT website, from their magazine. You know how states are trying to meet the performance standards imposed by No Child Left Behind? By not allowing kids to start school until they're older and therefore will have better test scores relative to their grade level!

Lots of states are engaging in this fundamentally retarded butchering of educational policy. Of course this could be ended in an instant by having the grade standards be controlled for age, but that would involve the Federal Government actually caring.

Dragged from their beds and beaten is too good for an awful lot of people.

It sounds like it wasn't just cheering, but using airhorns and other obnoxious behavior.

Still doesn't mean the student needs to be punished. :jayzus:

Our school threatened to expel anyone who "made a scene" with police and Social Studies teacher force.

Glad I didn't go to graduation now.

Just grabbed the 'ploma from the principle in the office, and I was outta there.

Felt like a thousand anvils off my back seeing that place recede in the mirror.

Ok. Why not? You just described my HS graduation, which was enjoyed by all.

In fact, what the fuck is even the point of having a graduation ceremony if you can't cheer your kid on?

Why am I not surprised to see that you'd support punishing others for the mistakes/stupidity of others?

Complete and utter bullshit, and I'd have not left that stage until my diploma was in my hand.

Punishing someone for the actions of someone else. I would have been furious. That was her diploma, she earned it, she met every criteria for it's issue, and therefore it is hers.

That principal would've gotten an earful in front of the entire senior student body, their friends, and their family.

I think there is quite a difference between "cheering" and carrying on like a pack of howler monkeys, the way I have observed some people behaving at recent graduations.

True. And that, I think, is what the problem was in the school districts that are cracking down. But, as MR pointed out, the policy of denying a diploma to anyone whose name is followed by cheers wasn't terribly well thought-out, and just invites troublemakers to cheer noisily for people they don't like.

[FONT=Verdana, Arial] I think Ms. Caisha Gayles needs to run for school board next election.
I bet that would really cause a problem with these draconian types.
If anything, she could be a thorn in the side of the school board.
That is what I would do.

I would have cheered when daughter received her degree, except I was crying too much... Other half did cheer.

At my graduation I was advised that undue celebration or displays from ME could result in my diploma being witheld, since the year prior some jackass jumped off the stage and broke his leg, but my highschool was so ghetto-tastic that nobody would have gotten their diplomas if they held up diplomas for cheering.

    Its just slowtarded.

Edit: The only way to fairly enforce something like this is to have someone with a timer, a decibel meter, and a list of all the kids' names, to record volume and length of cheering. And if someone did that, I'm fairly sure society would slaughter them as an example to future jackasses.

"Hey kids I know one more way to make you hate me before you graduate"
    "I'll deny you your diploma"

"Who the hell dented, scratched, spray painted and rammed into my car!!?"

Either way next year they will have another senior class that they will have to try and control.

I didn't come to my High school after my last day.
    They mailed me my diploma.
My poor brother still has my record to live with.
I was sent out of one class 24 times in a total of one semester.
I broke a window in the cafeteria, one of the prinicapals small tables, and many props from the theatre guild.
I accidentally aided a kid in breaking his arm.
I kind of miss the place. :P
